Unit Details
7 South is a telemetry medical-surgical unit specializing in respiratory distress, COPD, heart failure, and post-op care including ENT, watchman devices, urological, and gynecological procedures. Positions require working rotating weekend and holiday shifts.
Job Responsibilities
- Documentation and Clerical Functions: Document in the medical record according to procedures; complete department clerical functions as needed.
- Work Performance: Perform work timely and productively; suggest and support department changes; assume responsibility for assignments; support quality initiatives.
- Policies and Procedures: Adhere to policies related to patient care and hospital information; comply with safety policies including standard precautions.
- Communication and Relationships: Communicate effectively; understand cultural diversity; develop productive relationships; demonstrate accountability.
- Patient Care: Provide instruction to patients and families; assist with procedures and activities of daily living; monitor and report patient status.
- Feedback and Learning: Receive feedback constructively; identify learning needs; seek to improve skills; participate in self-review.
- Equipment and Communication: Report equipment issues; establish effective communication; contribute to unit activities.
- Core Nursing Assistant Responsibilities: Perform blood glucose testing, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections, and Foley care; perform ADLs; perform point of care testing; perform simple dressings and restraint management; maintain competency in advanced skills like EKGs, phlebotomy, IV removal, etc.
- Additional Duties: Perform system-wide competencies; other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must have either:
- 1 year of healthcare experience, OR
- 6 months as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency within 120 days, OR
- Enrollment in a health sciences training program with clinical rotation, OR
- Bachelor’s degree in health sciences.
- Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class and basic information system training.
- Microcomputer experience preferred.
- Effective communication skills.
- EMT or Paramedic enrollment or certification preferred.
- Access to medications limited to distribution to nurses.
- Certified Nursing Assistant certification.
