Job summary

Salem Health in Salem Hospital seeks a certified nursing assistant to deliver compassionate, high-quality care. You’ll assist with activities of daily living, monitor patients, document observations, and support a safe healing environment alongside nurses and the care team.

This part-time, non-exempt position features 12-hour night shifts (7:00 pm–7:30 am) with scheduling variability and opportunities to learn within the General Surgery department at Salem Health.

Qualifications

  • Licensed in Oregon to practice as a CNA.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care, including assistance with activities of daily living, mobility, positioning, hygiene, and comfort.
  • Observe, document, and promptly communicate changes in patient condition to the primary nurse.
  • Deliver care according to Salem Health policies and CNA duties; perform only Competency-based skills.
  • Accurately document patient care and observations in the EMR using approved terminology.
  • Support patient safety by following infection prevention practices and proper identification procedures.
  • Collaborate with nurses, providers, and interdisciplinary team during handoffs and education reinforcement.
  • Assist with unit operations, stocking supplies, transporting specimens, and maintaining equipment.

Schedule:7:00 pm -7:30 am, 12 hour shifts, variable scheduled days

Your role with us

As a certified nursing assistant (CNA) at Salem Health, you’ll play a vital role in delivering compassionate, high-quality care that supports our patients' comfort, dignity, and recovery. Working alongside nurses and other members of the care team, you’ll provide hands‑on assistance with daily living activities, monitor and report changes in patient condition, and help create a safe, supportive healing environment. Whether you’re assisting patients with mobility, reinforcing education, or ensuring accurate documentation, your work directly impacts the patient experience and contributes to exceptional outcomes.

What you’ll do
  • Provide direct patient care, including assistance with activities of daily living, mobility, positioning, hygiene, and comfort, while promoting patient independence whenever possible.
  • Observe, document, and promptly communicate changes in patient condition, behavior, skin integrity, vital signs, or safety concerns to the primary nurse to support timely clinical decision-making.
  • Deliver care in accordance with Salem Health policies, Oregon State Board Division 63 standards, and authorized CNA duties, performing only those skills for which competency has been demonstrated.
  • Accurately document patient care, observations, and interventions in the electronic medical record while utilizing approved medical terminology, downtime procedures, and hospital documentation standards.
  • Support patient safety by following infection prevention practices, using proper patient identification procedures, maintaining a clean and organized environment, and utilizing safe lifting and transfer techniques.
  • Collaborate with nurses, providers, and interdisciplinary team members by participating in patient handoffs, reinforcing patient education, and helping ensure continuity of care.
  • Demonstrate flexibility by assisting with patient care assignments across units as needed, participating in new employee orientation, and supporting unit operations through tasks such as stocking supplies, transporting specimens, and maintaining equipment and work areas.
Required qualifications
  • Licensed in the State of Oregon to practice as a CNA.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS).
