Job Summary
The role of a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is to work as and when required in support of the nursing team in providing high quality care and support. Perform direct resident care duties under the supervision of licensed nursing personnel. Assist residents with activities of daily living, provide basic nursing care, and assist in maintaining a safe and clean environment. Promote a compassionate physical and psychosocial environment for the residents.
Essential Job Functions
Customer Service
- Provide compassionate resident care services and establish positive interactions with customers including co‑workers, facility employees, and direct reports.
- Resolve customers’ issues and concerns, striving for outstanding experiences for residents, families, vendors, and other employees.
- Promote positive relationships with residents, visitors, regulators, and present a professional appearance.
- Promote the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide basic nursing care within the scope of practice.
- Explain and demonstrate fire/emergency procedures and participate in drills.
- Use and maintain facility equipment properly.
- Show respect for facility property.
- Explain and demonstrate infection control and isolation procedures.
- Explain and demonstrate proper body mechanics for resident handling.
- Ensure residents receive correct diet and use proper feeding techniques while respecting dignity and socialization needs.
- Maintain residents’ rooms neat, orderly, and clutter‑free.
- Promote and maintain relationships with co‑workers, residents, visitors, volunteers, and regulators.
- Respond within scope of practice to needs and concerns of residents and families.
- Work with the caregiving team to resolve resident and family issues.
- Promptly respond to call lights and other resident needs.
- Treat residents with compassion and dignity.
- Interact professionally with residents and families and involve them in care planning.
- Maintain good working relationships within the department and with other departments.
- Establish effective communication with residents and families.
- Ensure residents’ right to privacy.
- Show respect for residents’ personal property.
- Recognize a resident’s ability to make choices and support these choices within the constraints of the environment.
- Take and record temperature, pulse, respirations, and blood pressure.
- Ambulate residents and apply proper lifting and transferring techniques.
- Provide proper positioning and use of postural supports.
- Ensure residents’ comfort while helping them achieve the highest practicable level of functioning.
- Meet documentation standards and policies within shifts.
- Report significant changes in a resident’s condition to the Nurse Manager and caregiving team.
- Maintain resident confidentiality at all times.
Safeguarding and Safety
- Safeguard residents against abuse, harassment, and violence.
- Follow infection control procedures and safe patient handling.
- Apply knowledge of proper body alignment for self and resident.
- Promote adherence to institutional safety codes.
- Comply with all facility safety policies, regulations, and requirements regarding fire and life safety.
- Meet general health requirements set by facility policies.
Other Functions and Responsibilities
- Show flexibility and ability to work under pressure.
- Prioritize a busy workload.
- Adhere to Code of Conduct and Business Ethics, including documentation and reporting responsibilities.
- Work in a facility open 24/7, including holidays and inclement weather.
- Complete and submit timesheets correctly and timely.
- Complete annual education requirements.
- Wear proper identification and report to assignment on time and as scheduled.
Physical and Sensory Requirements
- Walk, stand, reach, bend, crouch, grasp, push, pull, and lift.
- Work at a rapid pace for an entire shift.
- Frequently lift or move objects and patients weighing up to 40 pounds; move, reposition, and transfer residents up to 300 pounds using a variety of equipment.
- Have finger and hand dexterity sufficient to type, handle instruments, and operate departmental equipment.
- Understand English, read, write, understand spoken instructions, and respond to pages.
- Remain calm in emergency situations and when handling multiple tasks.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Must be a Certified Nursing Assistant in good standing, or complete state-required competency evaluation within 4 months of employment.
- Maintain current state certification throughout employment.
- Complete 12 hours of in‑service education annually, meeting federal and state regulations.
- Communicate effectively and positively with residents, families, staff, and supervisors.
- Read, write, and follow oral and written directions at the required level.
- Maintain regular attendance.
- Meet all local health regulations, including drug screening, criminal background investigation, and reference inquiry.
