Job summary

Atlas is on the front lines of California’s transportation infrastructure, performing lab and field testing to ensure asphalt concrete, cement concrete and related materials meet strict quality standards. The role involves hands-on testing, field support and collaboration with engineers to keep projects compliant and on schedule.

The ideal candidate has a High School Diploma, 3+ years of material testing experience, a CA driver’s license, and relevant certifications such as Nuclear Gauge

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma.
  • 3 years of Material Testing Experience.
  • Valid California driver’s license and ability to travel within the State of California.
  • Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Minimum of 3 years of current experience in inspection, sampling and testing of materials used on state transportation projects.
  • Experience in performing compaction testing and Nuclear Gauge Operator Training.
  • ACI certification for Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade 1 or similar certification.

Job Description

Be on the front lines of California’s transportation infrastructure by supporting Caltrans roadway projects that millions rely on every day. This role plays a critical part in ensuring highways are built safely, meet strict quality standards, and stand the test of time through accurate materials testing and field support. If you enjoy hands‑on work and seeing tangible results of your efforts, this position puts you right in the action.

The ideal Construction Material Tester brings strong attention to detail, a solid understanding of construction materials, and the ability to work independently in dynamic field environments. Success in this role means consistently delivering precise test results, collaborating effectively with inspectors and engineers, and helping projects stay compliant, on schedule, and built right the first time.

Core Responsibilities

Perform lab testing during the production and placement of asphalt concrete, portland cement concrete, and other construction related material such as oil binder, aggregates, cements, and admixtures.

Technician may also visit quarries and mine pits to witness material source sampling, stockpiling and testing samples of binders, cement admixtures and other related materials.

High School Diploma

3 years of Material Testing Experience

Ability to operate independently, or constructively with others.

Possess a valid California driver’s license and be willing to travel temporarily as needed within the State of California.

Have the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50 lbs.

Have a minimum of 3 years of current experience in the inspection, sampling and testing of materials used on state transportation projects.

Experienced in performing compaction testing and certified in Nuclear Gauge Operator Training.

American Concrete Institute (ACI) certification for Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade 1 or similar type of certification.

About the Job

  • Employment Type: Full-time
  • Compensation: $45 - $55 hourly rate
    The expected salary range for the position is displayed in accordance with the state’s law. Final agreed upon compensation is based upon individual qualifications and experience.
