POSITION: Secondary Writing Coach (Job ID# 3963)

LOCATION: Calvert Middle School

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Secondary Writing Coach assists students in the development of their written communication skills and creates and manages authentic writing opportunities/events. The Secondary Writing Coach works collaboratively with school administration, staff, and students to determine writing needs, and develops and facilitates writing workshops, partnerships, and publication opportunities. The Secondary Writing Coach, as the representative of the school and secondary English Language Arts, ensures that the publications and community partnerships are appropriate and aligned with the practices of Calvert County Public Schools. The writing coach will work with students and staff in a school setting both during and after school to produce and refine student writing. Writing sessions will focus on opportunities for students to see themselves as writers and gain experience expressing themselves through multiple genres.

REPORTS TO: Supervisor of secondary English/ Language Arts and school Principal.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: (These are pre-employment knowledge, abilities, and skills that apply to the Essential Job Functions.) At the time of application, the candidate must possess:

  • A passion for writing as a means of self-expression.
  • Proficient knowledge of Office 365, Google Docs, Flipgrid and database software applicable to the department.
  • Knowledge of instructional/tutoring practices related to developing diversified writing skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written).
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and project management; able to meet deadlines and carry a project to its completion.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and prioritize.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and summarize data and write reports.
  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relations and work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, parents, administration, and community partners.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as Calvert County Public Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct needs assessments for student writing; compile and analyze CCPS writing data; identify strengths and deficiencies; prepare reports as necessary.
  • Identify students for emerging and advanced writing opportunities.
  • Advise, coach and document student progress in the development of writing/writing process.
  • Provide instructional and technical support to students, faculty, and parents on instructional strategies, academic software, subject databases, materials and ELA tutorials supporting writing/the writing process.
  • Work collaboratively with student writers to establish voice and self-confidence; provide practical feedback and reflection opportunities during workshops and one-on-one conferences.
  • Organize schoolwide writing workshops, parent nights, and student writing publication opportunities.

OTHER DUTIES:

Performs related work as required or assigned by the school principal or designee.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience applied to the current year Extra Pay for Extra Duty Longevity Pay Schedule.

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the policy on evaluation as established by the Calvert County Public Schools.

EFFECTIVE DATE OF POSITION : SY26-27

State law requires that anyone hired after October 1, 1986, who will have contact with school children, must be fingerprinted and submit to a criminal background investigation. Federal law requires that a new employee must complete the Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I-9) in person before beginning employment. Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a drug screen. Current employees of the Calvert County Public Schools are exempt from these requirements.
