Job summary

Choctaw Middle School in Choctaw, OK is seeking a Para-Professional to assist handicapped students under the supervision of the special education team. The role requires collaboration with teachers, staff and families, adherence to confidentiality, and the ability to carry out tasks to support IEP goals. 168-day contract; pay determined by SECNP Master Contract.

Starting date is immediate, with duties including assisting with mobility, classroom tasks, and safety during activities and excursions.

Qualifications

• High school diploma is required.
• Test for Highly Qualified Classroom Assistant, or have 48 hours of college credit or have at least an Associate's Degree.
• Ability to work with children, staff and parents.
• Maintain confidentiality.
• Physical requirements as per attached description.

Responsibilities

• Provide supportive help to the handicapped students as prescribed by the special education teachers.
• Carry out tasks prescribed by the special teacher in meeting student needs as stated on I.E.P.
• Be able to meet the needs of handicapped students.
• Provide support to the special teacher in safety and well-being of students at school and on excursions.
• Serve on placement team, I.E.P. meetings and staffing when input is required.
• Assist students who may soil themselves or need help with ambulatory, eating, or other conditions.
• Work with contracted and related services for the handicapped.
• Cooperate with regular classroom teachers when mainstreaming in the least restrictive environment.
• Assist in diagnostic evaluation of students as requested by the special education teacher.
• Serve as a resource for the student personnel evaluation team as needed.
• Show initiative, act professionally, maintain confidentiality in dealing with confidential folders and information.
• Be trained to use A/V and other equipment in the special education classroom.
• Provide services to help students in education-related tasks (examples: medical and mobility supports).
• Performs other duties as prescribed by supervisors.

EVALUATED BY:Site Principal with input from assigned teacher

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 168 day contract. Salary to be determined as per SECNP Master Contract

JOB GOAL: To work closely with one or few handicapped pupils on a regular basis in an effort to provide them with the physical help and emotional support they need to gain as full benefits from the district’s special education program as possible.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provide supportive help to the handicapped students as prescribed by the special education teachers.
• Carry out those tasks prescribed by the special teacher in meeting the needs of students, as stated on their I.E.P.
• Be able to positively meet the needs of handicapped students.
• Provide support to the special teacher in looking after the safety and well being of students at school and on excursions.
• Serve on placement team, I.E.P. meetings and staffing, when input is required.
• Provide those services needed to help students who may soil themselves, and who may need help with ambulatory problems, eating, or other conditions that may affect their well being at school.
• Work cooperatively with contracted and related services for the handicapped.
• Work cooperatively with regular classroom teachers when mainstreaming in the least restrictive environment.
• Help in the diagnostic evaluation of students, as requested by the special education teacher.
• Serves as a resource person, if and when requested, to the student personnel evaluation team conferring about one of the students to whom assigned.
• Show initiative in performing job responsibilities, act in a professional manner, maintain confidentiality in dealing with confidential folders, conferences and other aspects of information gained while working in special programs.
• Be trained and able to use A/V and other equipment utilized in the special education classroom.
• Be trained and provide services to students as needed to help them assess their education (example of services that may be rendered: tube feeding, catheterization, suctioning, positioning, delivering medications, etc.).
• Performs other such duties as may be prescribed by supervisors.
