Job summary

Karman Space & Defense is seeking a CMM Programmer III in Utah to develop, edit, and execute CMM programs to verify high-precision machined components meet stringent dimensional and quality requirements. You will program Brown & Sharpe and Zeiss CMMs using PC-DMIS, Calypso, or similar software and work with machinists and engineers to resolve issues.

Your role supports first-article, in-process, incoming, and final inspections, ensuring compliance with GD&T and engineering drawings.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Five or more years of dimensional inspection experience in aerospace, defense, avionics, medical, or a comparable regulated manufacturing environment.
• Proficiency programming and editing CMM programs using PC-DMIS, Calypso, or comparable software.
• Experience setting up and operating Coordinate Measuring Machines and related inspection equipment.
• Advanced ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and technical specifications.
• Knowledge of GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
• Knowledge of inspection methods and precision measuring tools.
• Experience with precision measuring equipment and metrology systems.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

• Programs, sets up, and operates CMMs using metrology software such as PC-DMIS and Calypso.
• Creates, edits, evaluates, and maintains CMM inspection programs for high-precision parts.
• Interprets engineering drawings, specs, and GD&T to develop inspection approaches.
• Performs first-article, in-process, incoming, and final inspections.
• Troubleshoots CMM equipment and software issues and recommends corrective actions.
• Identifies opportunities to improve measurement processes and repeatability.
• Collaborates with machinists, engineers, and Quality to resolve dimensional issues.

• Documents inspection results and maintains quality records.

As a CMM Programmer III, you will develop, edit, and execute Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) programs used to verify high-precision machined components meet demanding dimensional and quality requirements. You will program and operate Brown & Sharpe and Zeiss CMMs using PC-DMIS, Calypso, or comparable metrology software, interpret complex engineering drawings and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), and partner with machinists, engineers, and Quality personnel to resolve inspection and manufacturing issues. Your work directly supports accurate first-article, in-process, incoming, and final inspection of aerospace and defense hardware.

Responsibilities

• Performs first-article, in-process, incoming, and final inspections using CMMs and precision measurement equipment.
• Troubleshoots CMM equipment, programming, calibration, sensor, software, and fixture-related issues and recommends corrective actions.
• Identifies and implements opportunities to improve measurement processes, inspection efficiency, and repeatability.
• Collaborates with machinists, engineers, and Quality personnel to resolve dimensional issues and verify product compliance.
• Develops and supports inspection fixtures designed to minimize measurement error and improve inspection consistency.
• Documents inspection results, completes required reports and logs, and maintains accurate quality records within applicable systems.
• Supports the Quality Management System (QMS), internal and external audits, regulatory requirements, and company quality initiatives.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Five or more years of dimensional inspection experience in aerospace, defense, avionics, medical, or a comparable regulated manufacturing environment.
• Demonstrated proficiency programming and editing CMM programs using PC-DMIS, Calypso, or comparable CMM programming software.
• Experience setting up and operating Coordinate Measuring Machines and related inspection equipment.
• Advanced ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and technical specifications.
• Advanced knowledge and application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) in accordance with ASME Y14.5.
• Knowledge of standard mechanical inspection methods, measurement tools, and tolerances used to determine product acceptance.
• Experience using precision measuring and test equipment such as bore gages, profilometers, height gages, micrometers, and optical comparators.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test and background check.

Preferred Qualifications

• Additional technical or post-secondary education.
• Experience programming and operating Brown & Sharpe and Zeiss CMM equipment.
• Working knowledge of AS9100D and ISO 9001 quality management systems.
• Understanding of aerospace and defense industry regulations and quality requirements.
• Knowledge of common material, coating, plating, and nondestructive testing specifications.
• Experience with quality assurance sampling plans, visual inspection, dimensional examination, and related test methods.
• Experience with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems such as Global Shop or Epicor.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to perform inspection and manufacturing support activities in a production environment.
• Ability to stand for extended periods while performing inspection activities.
• Ability to use precision measurement and inspection equipment as required by the position.
