Salary Range: $30.00 To $40.00 Hourly

Position Summary

The CMM Operator will operate the CMM machines to ensure product conformity through quality inspections, including operating new and existing CMM programs and interpreting CMM and inspection results. The CMM Operator will support the Quality Manager in maintaining an up-to-date library of CMM reports and all other support documentation as required by internal, industry and customer procedures. The CMM Operator will report out on daily and weekly objectives to management – and follow-up on all actions through completion. The CMM Operator reports to the Quality Manager and supports the company strategic plan, including the company’s mission, vision and values.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

  • Follow safety policies and maintain 5S practices throughout the department; the CMM and inspection areas should be a good example for safety and 5S for the site.
  • Use and operate the CMM machines with PC-DMIS software – TPT uses a combination of Hexagon and Brown & Sharpe CMM machines. The output will be all required measurement data into a CMM report that can be easily understood by engineering and quality personnel.
  • Perform surface plate setup inspections, dimensional and layout inspections, and other manual inspections on manufactured parts and fixtures/tooling using industry standard aerospace measurement equipment and gages. The CMM Operator will be routinely inspecting parts with tolerances between .001 and .0001 inches. The CMM Operator will have a solid understanding of mechanical metrology, tolerance ratios, technical specifications, mathematical unit conversions, statistical inference, fundamentals of planar and solid geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Perform first article inspections (AS9102) using the CMM machine(s) and/or industry standard aerospace measurement equipment and gages.
  • Ensure quality and accuracy for all measurements taken and for all work completed. All CMM and inspection outputs should be thoroughly checked for accuracy to ensure the highest level of quality assurance.
  • Understand ASME Y14.5 (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing – GD&T) with the ability to apply these fundamentals to engineering drawings, specifications, and procedures. The CMM Operator should have the ability to collaborate with engineering and quality personnel for any interpretation or troubleshooting. The CMM Operator will have very strong technical knowledge of GD&T principles and will be able to read, understand, and follow written procedures, mechanical drawings, and engineering rendering including those with GD&T callouts.
  • Interface and coordinate with the integrated product team (IPT – Operations, Materials, Quality and Engineering) to align customer inspection requirements for quality, delivery and cost to ensure <0.5% return rate and >95% on-time delivery, while achieving monthly sales goals. The CMM Operator shall provide timely status of CMM-related inspection activities.
  • Report progress on inspection activities (work order operations) including completion of “buy-offs” for all production paperwork and within the ERP system (electronically).
  • Adhere to internal and customer deadlines set forth by management.
  • Understand and adhere to the company’s Quality Management System (QMS) policies and procedures to ensure product quality is maintained throughout the entirety of the process.

Education and Experience

  • At least 1 year of experience operating a CMM machine for complex parts and assemblies – aerospace precision machined components preferred.
  • At least 3 years of experience in a fast-paced manufacturing facility – aerospace and/or production machine shop experience preferred. Very strong attention to detail and accuracy is required for all efforts.
  • At least 5 years of experience reading complex blueprints, technical specifications, and work instructions.

Technical Skills

  • 2 or more years of experience using MS Office, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. The CMM Operator must be able to summary results and communicate back to the department and to management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication required – the CMM Operator will regularly interface with internal customers using various means of communication.
  • Work with little to no supervision – the CMM Operator must be able to apply inspection fundamentals and industry best practices to achieve results quickly, efficiently, and accurately.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to lift, carry, push, pull, turn/twist, or otherwise move objects up to 25 pounds frequently. Requires standing frequently and walking/sitting occasionally throughout the day. Physical medium-duty work required.
  • Requires teamwork. Reliable attendance and willingness to work overtime as required, including extended hours within the week and/or weekends. Flexible schedule is sometimes required.
