Job Summary

The Medication Assistant (MA) serves as a caregiver who provides resident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned residents under the supervision of a charge nurse. The MA delivers age‑appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the resident per plan of care. Responsibilities include assistance with daily living activities such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, recording vital signs, and providing psycho‑social support. The MA may assist residents with transferring, repositioning, and walking using correct transfer techniques and equipment, and provides range of motion and passive exercises. They complete tasks related to food preparation and dining, creating a positive dining experience, and may assist residents with meals and snacks, providing water and supplements as appropriate. The MA administers prescribed medications as delegated by a licensed nurse within state regulations, documents outcomes related to care, monitors and records vital signs, and communicates any changes to the charge nurse. Additional duties include collecting non‑invasive body fluid specimens, housekeeping and laundry services to support resident living areas, and supporting resident participation in wellness and recreational programs.

Qualifications
  • High school graduate or GED preferred but not required.
  • Minimum age 18 preferred; prior clinical or nursing assistant experience preferred.
  • Must satisfactorily complete yearly department‑specific competency testing and maintain a record of continuing education credits (minimum 12 hours annually) and required certifications.
  • Iowa: Must hold a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing and complete a state‑approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course after obtaining CNA.
  • Minnesota: Must be registered with the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry, have completed the 75‑hour course, and complete a state‑approved Trained Medication Assistant course.
  • North Dakota: Must hold a CNA certification with the State Board of Nursing and complete a state‑approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course. Medication Assistant I certification is required for Assisted Living or Basic Care facilities; Medication Assistant II is required for skilled nursing facilities.
  • South Dakota: Must successfully complete the state‑approved Certified Medication Aide (CMA) course and maintain certification with the State Board of Nursing.
  • All Good Samaritan Society Locations: Must possess the state‑required Certified/Trained Medication Aide certification (CMA or TMA) and have prior CNA certification.
