Cloud Operations Engineer I:
Cloud Operations Engineer I (Junior)
Reports to: CISO & Chief AI Officer (with day-to-day technical mentorship from the Senior Cloud Operations Engineer) Team: CloudOps (new team) Level: Entry–Early Career IC
Role summary
The Cloud Operations Engineer I supports the day-to-day health of Jumpmind's production cloud environment, building foundational operations skills while working closely with the Senior Cloud Operations Engineer. This is a hands‑on, learning‑forward role for someone early in their cloud/infrastructure career who wants to grow into a senior operations or SRE track. Jumpmind expects this role to use AI tools as a standard part of daily work — from day one, you'll be encouraged to use AI to speed up troubleshooting, documentation, and scripting rather than doing everything by hand.
Day-to-day responsibilities
- Monitor dashboards and alerts for infrastructure health; triage and elevate anomalies
- Respond to first‑line production alerts and incidents under guidance from the Senior Cloud Operations Engineer
- Execute routine patching and maintenance tasks on a defined schedule
- Assist with backup verification and disaster recovery test execution
- Apply pre‑defined infrastructure changes (via existing Terraform/OpenTofu configs) under review
- Maintain and update runbooks and documentation as processes are learned and refined
- Track and report on basic cost/usage metrics to support FinOps reviews
- Help gather evidence for recurring compliance/audit requests (screenshots, config exports, access lists) under direction
- Shadow incident response and postmortems to build troubleshooting judgment
- Participate in an on‑call rotation once ramped (typically after an initial training period)
- Use AI tools (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot) to assist with troubleshooting, writing/updating runbooks, and drafting scripts, with senior review before anything touches production
- Help maintain and extend simple AI‑driven automations built by the Senior Cloud Operations Engineer (e.g., alert triage bots, log‑summary agents) under guidance
- Build comfort with AI‑assisted workflows as a core operational skill, with growth expected toward independently building small automations/agents over time
Required qualifications
- 0–2 years of experience in IT operations, systems administration, helpdesk/NOC, or a related technical role (internships count)
- Basic understanding of cloud computing concepts (compute, storage, networking)
- Comfort working in a Linux command‑line environment
- Eagerness to learn cloud platforms, IaC, and operational tooling
- Strong attention to detail and clear communication, especially during incidents
- Practical, hands‑on experience using AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot) for real technical tasks — not just casual/personal use
- Genuine interest in learning to build and use AI agents to automate repetitive work
Preferred qualifications
- Exposure to AWS (or another major cloud provider), even via coursework, certifications, or personal projects
- AWS Cloud Practitioner or equivalent certification (or actively pursuing one)
- Basic scripting experience (Python or Bash)
- Any experience (even coursework or personal projects) building a simple AI agent, chatbot, or automation using an LLM API
