Job summary

SoftWriters is seeking a Cloud Operations Engineer to design and manage cloud infrastructure supporting CI/CD on AWS and Azure. You will partner with engineers to deliver scalable, secure production systems and optimize operational costs.

The role requires hands-on cloud experience, strong coding skills in C#, .NET, Python, and proficiency with Docker/Kubernetes, IaC, and monitoring tools. Hybrid work in Pittsburgh is available.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • 3+ years of experience deploying and supporting applications in cloud or on-prem environments.
  • 3+ years of experience with CI/CD tools (e.g., GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Jenkins).
  • 3+ years of experience in setting up and/or maintaining automated build/deployment systems.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud monitoring and alerting tools (Datadog, Prometheus/Grafana, Azure Monitor, CloudWatch).
  • Strong programming/scripting experience (C#, .NET, Python, Bash).
  • Hands-on experience with SQL, web technologies, and distributed systems.
  • Experience supporting production systems on-call, including incident response and root-cause analysis.
  • Proficiency with Git and version-control workflows; Docker/Kubernetes and API services.
  • Expertise in infrastructure automation (IaC) and version control systems.

Responsibilities

  • Implement, maintain, and evolve public cloud (AWS/Azure) environments for software products.
  • Set up, plan, and configure cloud solution environments.
  • Deploy, manage, and operate scalable, secure, and fault-tolerant systems.
  • Migrate on-premises applications to cloud infrastructure.
  • Apply best practices for cloud deployment and operations.
  • Estimate cloud usage costs and implement cost controls.
  • Write automation code and tests; conduct code reviews.
  • Manage access, security, and performance of applications.
  • Participate in on-call rotation to resolve incidents.
  • Integrate cloud apps with external systems; research optimal designs.
  • Provide guidance on cloud security and architecture; create prototypes.

The Opportunity

We're seeking a Cloud Operations Engineer to join our growing team and help shape the future of healthcare technology. The Cloud Operations Engineer role designs and implements cloud infrastructure supporting CI/CD on Azure and AWS. The Cloud Operations Engineer brings a strong understanding of software architecture and development workflows, along with skills in prioritization, problem solving, and cross-functional collaboration. This role partners with engineers, architects, QA, and leadership to deliver and support scalable production systems.

Location: Hybrid - Pittsburgh, PA (Core office days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday)

Reports to: Director, Technology Operations

What You'll Do
  • Implement, maintain, and evolve public cloud (AWS/Azure) hosted software products and services
  • Set up, plan, and configure cloud solution environments
  • Deploy, manage, and operate scalable, highly available, secure, and fault-tolerant systems
  • Migrate existing on-premises applications to public cloud infrastructure
  • Identify and implement appropriate use of cloud deployment and operational best practices
  • Estimate cloud usage costs and implement operational cost control mechanisms
  • Write automation code/unit tests/documentation and perform code reviews
  • Configure, manage, and monitor application access, security, and performance
  • Participate in an on-call rotation; respond to, troubleshoot, and remediate production incidents to meet availability and reliability targets
  • Integrate cloud hosted applications with external customer and 3rd-party systems
  • Perform extensive research and analysis to make optimal architecture and design decisions
  • Provide expert guidance on cloud application security
  • Create proof-of-concept prototypes
Required
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related technical field
  • 3+ years of experience deploying and supporting applications in cloud or on-prem environments
  • 3+ years of experience with CI/CD tools (e.g., GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Jenkins)
  • 3+ years of experience in setting up and/or maintaining automated build/deployment system
  • Hands-on experience with cloud monitoring and alerting tools (e.g., Datadog, Prometheus/Grafana, Azure Monitor, CloudWatch)
  • Strong programming/scripting experience (e.g., C#, .NET, Python, Bash)
  • Hands-on experience with SQL, web technologies, and distributed systems
  • Experience supporting production systems on-call, including incident response and root-cause analysis
  • Proficiency with Git and version-control workflows (branching, pull requests, code review)
  • Proficiency in containerization technologies (Docker/Kubernetes) and API services
  • Expertise in infrastructure automation (IaC) and version control systems (Git, branching, PR workflows)
  • Demonstrated ability supporting production systems, including incident response and troubleshooting
Preferred
  • Advanced level certification in Microsoft Azure (Solutions Architect Expert/DevOps Engineer Expert) or similar skillset certification
  • Integration of cloud services with on-premises technologies from Microsoft, IBM, HP, etc.
  • Experience with IT compliance and risk management requirements (security, privacy, SOX, HIPAA)
  • Experience utilizing Jenkins to manage build jobs for front-end code/templates; understanding of plugins within a Jenkins environment
  • Hands-on working experience with the cloud network and security services
  • Working knowledge of multiple operating systems (Windows/Linux/macOS/mobile platforms)
  • Automation experience with infrastructure and configuration management tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Chef, Puppet, Salt, Argo, etc.
  • Mobile build and test automation experience a plus (iOS, Android)
