Cloud FinOps Engineer
The Cloud FinOps Engineer plays a critical role in overseeing the financial governance and optimization of the organization's cloud environments, specifically across Azure, AWS, and GCP. This position exists to ensure that cloud investments are effectively managed, maintaining transparency in costs and accountability in financial controls. The role collaborates closely with various teams, including Cloud Engineering, Platform Operations, and Finance, to enhance the organization's cloud spending strategy and drive business value. In this position, you will be responsible for establishing best practices in cloud financial governance, leading cost management initiatives, and providing insights through detailed reporting and analytics. The objective is to maximize the return on cloud investments by identifying optimization opportunities while fostering a culture of fiscal responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
- Cloud Financial Governance
- Establish and maintain cloud financial governance processes.
- Ensure accurate allocation of cloud costs to products, applications, and business units.
- Implement chargeback and cost accountability models.
- Serve as the subject matter expert for cloud financial management practices.
- Cost Management & Optimization
- Identify and manage cloud cost optimization opportunities across platforms.
- Collaborate with teams for rightsizing, storage optimization, and licensing initiatives.
- Monitor savings opportunities and report on achieved versus forecast benefits.
- Financial Analysis & Reporting
- Develop and maintain dashboards for various stakeholders.
- Produce regular reports on cloud spend, trends, and budget performance.
- Forecasting & Budget Management
- Develop expenditure forecasts across multiple cloud platforms.
- Monitor variances in forecasts and assist in the development of annual budgets.
- Financial Data Analytics
- Analyze cloud billing and consumption data.
- Investigate spend anomalies and emerging trends.
- Reservations & Savings Plan Management
- Manage commitment-based discount programs and perform utilization reviews.
- Develop recommendations to optimize cloud savings plans.
- Contract & Vendor Management
- Provide insights for vendor negotiations and support procurement activities.
- Assist in cloud vendor reviews and strategic initiatives.
- Marketplace & Commercial Operations
- Oversee cloud marketplace purchases and ensure financial controls are maintained.
- Shared Services Cost Allocation
- Calculate and manage financial models for shared cloud services.
Required Skills
- Strong experience in Cloud Financial Operations, IT Financial Management, or related fields.
- Hands-on experience with major cloud platforms, particularly Azure and AWS.
- Proficient understanding of cloud consumption and billing models.
- Experience with tools such as Apptio Cloudability and AWS Cost Explorer.
- Excellent financial modeling and analytical skills.
- Strong presentation and communication capabilities, especially in conveying complex financial data.
Preferred Skills
- FinOps Certified Practitioner or equivalent certification.
- Microsoft Azure or AWS certification.
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related field.
- Familiarity with financial planning tools like Oracle Essbase or SQL.
