Job summary

Freeport-McMoRan is seeking personnel to perform safe closure of historic mine openings, conduct detailed field surveys using GPS, and operate light vehicles and equipment across remote sites.

The role requires hiking in rugged terrain, ability to travel up to 90% of the time, and passing safety exams. A valid driver’s license and teamwork are essential for success in this hands-on field position.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Use GPS instrumentation for field surveys, data collection and verification.
  • Perform safe closure of historic mine-openings using various technologies.
  • Operate pickup trucks with trailers and other equipment such as a UTV.
  • Hike to remote locations and perform labor-intensive work in rugged terrain.
  • Carry out site preparation and construction activities.
  • Propose methods and procedures for surveys and closures.
  • Communicate findings to Engineering and operations teams.
  • Support maintenance and operations as needed.

What You Will Do

Under general supervision, perform duties related to the safe closure of open mines, conducts detailed field surveys and additional responsibilities in support of the Historic Mine-Openings Safety Program (HMOSP).

  • Use GPS Instrumentation for conducting accurate field surveys, data collection and verification
  • Perform the safe closure of historic mine-openings (adits, shafts and other abandoned mine features) using various technologies
  • Operate pickup trucks with trailers and other equipment such as a UTV
  • Drive/hike to remote locations over rough terrain and conduct labor intensive work
  • Complete construction and work site preparation
  • Recommends methods and procedures for conducting assigned surveys and closure activities
  • Communicate findings to Engineering and operational personnel
  • Perform minor maintenance and assist operations with support activities
What You Bring To Freeport
  • One (1) year of experience with historic mine-openings closure activities OR one (1) year of experience in an industrial or large commercial work environment
  • Must have completed academic and practical competencies required (this includes Line of Progression requirements for internal employees where LOP Exists) and have experience demonstrating the required aptitude. The selected candidate shall demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge and skills while also passing a written assessment where required. This exam is based on skills/abilities and/or academic knowledge; as well as safety.
  • Demonstrated advanced skills in construction and/or fabrication
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 90% of the time
  • Must have an unrestricted and valid driver's license
  • Must be able to travel for three (3) week periods
  • Must be able to hike three to five (3-5) miles per day in rugged terrain
  • Must be able to carry loads over 50 lbs. in a backpack
  • Ability to successfully work in a team environment
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions in training and during the normal course of completing assigned duties
Preferred
  • High Schooldiploma or GED
  • Prior work experience with fabrication and masonry
  • Experience with outdoor activities
  • Entry level knowledge of carpentry and or masonry techniques
  • Experience with safely operating pickup trucks towing trailers
  • Prior work experience in an operating mine
  • Familiarity with hand tools and power tools
  • Ability to read and understand maps
What We Offer You

The estimated pay range for this role is currently$24.00 - $32.00/hour. This range reflects base salary only and does not include bonus payments, benefits or retirement contributions. Actual base pay is determined by experience, qualifications, skills and other job-related factors. This role is eligible for additional discretionary and incentive payment considerations based on company and individual performance. More details will be shared during the hiring process.
