The Department of Medical Education at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso Paul L. Foster School of Medicine (PLFSOM) invites applications for a full-time, open-rank faculty position as a Clinician Medical Educator.
We seek a physician educator who is passionate about preparing medical students to integrate scientific knowledge with clinical reasoning and patient care. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary community of clinician and basic-science educators and will provide faculty leadership in clinical science, clinical reasoning, and clinical skills education across the pre-clerkship curriculum.
This position is designed for a physician who wants to make medical education the major focus of an academic career while remaining actively engaged in clinical practice. Approximately 20-30% effort will be devoted to patient care, with no nights, weekends, or call required, and 70-80% protected for medical education and associated academic responsibilities.
Depending on experience and programmatic needs, opportunities for curricular leadership may include serving as a course director, co-director, thread or content leader, or in another leadership role.
PLFSOM’s pre-clerkship curriculum is an integrated, organ-system-based program built around clinical presentations. The Department of Medical Education leads its planning, development, and delivery through an interdisciplinary faculty of clinician and basic-science educators.
The successful candidate will collaborate with basic-science and clinical faculty to connect mechanisms of health and disease with clinical manifestations, diagnostic evaluation, clinical decision-making, and principles of patient management.
A major component of the position is leadership and instruction within the Medical Skills curriculum, including medical interviewing, history-taking, physical examination, communication, oral presentation, clinical documentation, clinical reasoning, and other foundational patient-care skills.
Faculty employ a variety of evidence-informed instructional approaches, including interactive large- and small-group teaching, case-based and team-based learning, deliberate practice, simulation, standardized-patient encounters, and other experiential formats.
Clinical education is supported by the Training and Educational Center for Healthcare Simulation (TECHS), which provides more than 24,000 square feet of simulation space across two sites. Resources include high-fidelity simulation, task training, virtual-reality simulation, and standardized-patient experiences. TECHS is accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare in Assessment, Research, and Teaching/Education.
The successful candidate will have opportunities for faculty-level leadership in the formative and summative assessment of clinical knowledge, reasoning, and skills. Activities may include case-based assessment, direct observation, rubric-guided and narrative assessment, OSCEs and other performance-based examinations, assessment blueprinting, case and scoring-tool development, rater preparation and calibration, analysis of learner-performance data, and assessment quality improvement.
The faculty member will also provide formative feedback, coaching, mentoring, and educational support to medical students and may participate in the development and calibration of faculty, residents, teaching assistants, standardized patients, and other instructors.
Faculty responsibilities include research and/or scholarship, academically related public service, and institutional governance. Faculty will have opportunities to develop a scholarly portfolio aligned with their academic interests, which may include medical education scholarship, clinical or translational research, community-engaged research, or other areas consistent with their expertise and academic goals.
Interest or demonstrated accomplishment in medical education scholarship and participation in regional or national organizations devoted to medical education are also valued. Candidates considered for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or higher should have an emerging or established regional or national reputation in medical education and/or their clinical discipline.
