JOB DESCRIPTIONWake Forest University School of Medicine, Animal Resources Program, is in search of a Clinical Veterinarian to join our team. The Animal Resources Program at the School of Medicine has the following mission:
- Provide the highest quality of veterinary medical care, husbandry, enrichment and professional technical support to enable excellence in biomedical research at WFUSOM
- Promote a culture of respect and compassion for all laboratory animals worked with in research
- Train comparative veterinary specialists and advance lab animal sciences through innovative research

Our program is searching for a dedicated individual to fulfill the clinical veterinarian position, so we can work together to meet the mission and service responsibilities of our program. We support multiple campuses, serving varied research programs and laboratory animal species, including but not limited to, non-human primates, swine, sheep, rabbits, rodents and small populations of aquatic species.
JOB SUMMARYThe ARP Veterinary Services supports the academic mission by providing essential clinical care of animals used for research, by ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and support of the animal-based research endeavor across all Wake Forest campuses. The Veterinary Staff must assure animals are healthy and suitable for research activities, respond to emergency and daily clinical needs of animals, provide support for animal-related research activities, assure compliance with regulations and provide support for overall animal welfare. Under limited supervision, the clinical veterinarian provides veterinary care to animals used in the research and teaching programs of Wake Forest University; directs and guides Animal Resources Program (ARP) veterinary technicians; guides Laboratory Animal Medicine Residents; and participates in Animal Care and Use protocol review and facility inspections.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCEDegree in Veterinary Medicine from an AVMA accredited school with one year of veterinary practice experience. ACLAM residency training or board certification is a plus.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATIONState licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the United States.
SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS- Training and/or experience in laboratory animal medicine
- Excellent medical and surgical skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work independently on assigned projects.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Provides veterinary care (medical, surgical, and emergency) to laboratory animal species. This includes daily rounds, physical examinations, diagnostic evaluations, procedures, and routine health monitoring. Rotates with veterinary faculty, staff, and trainees to provide weekend and holiday care.
- Develops and implements treatment plans, and completes medical records accordingly; communicates treatment and follow- up plan with Principal Investigators.
- Develops, implements, and provides suggestions for improvement on standard operating procedures pertaining to the care and use of research animals.
- Participates in monitoring animals following surgery, including pain assessment.
- Provides instruction for certification program for testing nonhuman primates for tuberculosis. Supervises intradermal tuberculin tests, and participate in reading testing as well as completing paperwork.
- Provides guidance, assistance to, and training of ARP veterinary technicians and other ARP support personnel.
- Participates in hands-on training of veterinary students, residents, and fellows.
- Maintains compliance with regulations, policies, and safety procedures.
- Performs other related work incidental to the duties described herein.
