Job Description Summary

The Clinical Veterinarian is responsible for examining, diagnosing, and treating laboratory animals to ensure their health and compliance with regulations governing humane and ethical treatment. This role supports study conduct through collaboration with Study Directors and other personnel. A key contributor to the reproductive toxicology department, particularly in infant care and dam assessments, the Clinical Veterinarian also develops staff training programs and care guidelines for high-risk animals.

About The Role

This site was initially focused as a CDC quarantine facility but has grown into a center of excellence for discovery phase biopharmaceutical studies focusing on NHPs for non-GLP general therapy, early discovery studies, and model development. The site offers a flexible and dynamic work environment where staff can engage in various aspects of research, working closely with sponsors both virtually and onsite. The work environment is friendly and small, with 35 employees, allowing for close interaction and visibility to senior management. Despite its size, it is one of four large animal research facilities nationwide, offering access to diverse scientific expertise and collaboration opportunities. Veterinarians are highly involved in studies, assisting study directors with data interpretation, surgeries, and biopsies.

The Clinical Veterinarian will:

  • Provide routine and specialized veterinary medical, dental, imaging, and surgical services
  • Lead the care and resolution of complex medical cases
  • Assist in designing and implementing preventive medicine programs
  • Train and supervise staff on technical procedures and humane animal use
  • Maintain compliance with federal regulations on animal care and use
  • Develop, review, and implement SOPs related to animal issues
  • Conduct training sessions on husbandry, veterinary care, animal models, safety, biosecurity, emergency response, and occupational health
  • Support the Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee in reviewing protocols and managing animal colonies
  • Select animals for research based on species knowledge and research techniques
  • Assume regulatory responsibilities in the absence of the attending veterinarian
  • Execute preventive health programs and manage domestic isolation and colony health
  • Share clinical rotation duties, including on-call weekends and holidays
  • Act as an after-hours emergency contact
  • Advise on animal model development
  • Author and present publications and conference presentations
  • Undertake special projects or interest assignments

Requirements

What You'll Need to Succeed

Education:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) required
  • DACLAM Certification is a benefit but not required (time provided to study for the exam)

Experience:

  • 3+ years in veterinary medicine, with a willingness to learn working with small primates preferred
  • New graduates are welcome to apply

Licensing:

  • Active veterinary license in at least one US state
  • Must obtain California State License in Veterinary Medicine within one year of starting
  • Graduates of non-AVMA accredited veterinary schools must have ECFVG certification
