Job summary

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley seeks a Clinical Therapist to provide school-based mental health services to students and families across multiple districts. You will work within the College of Education and P-16 Integration / Human Development and School Services, supporting RtI/MTSS efforts and collaborating with internship teams.

The role requires a Master’s degree in a mental health field and active or temporary licensure in Texas, with at least two years of counseling experience.

Scope of Job

Provide clearly identified and easily accessible therapeutic mentalhealth support services that address the mental and emotionalwell-being of students (clients) and families representing multipleschools in multiple districts. Provide support to districtinternship team, RtI/MTSS key personnel, and provide school-basedmental health services (i.e., counseling services) at campus duringtransition year and high-risk cases to improve K-12 students'positive mental health.

Description of Duties

• Utilizing various assessment instruments and techniques, aspart of a multi-disciplinary team, to assist in diagnosing mentalhealth conditions and determining appropriate interventionstrategies.


• Identify and treat mental health/behavioral health conditionsthrough the implementation of planning, clinical documentation andtreatment plans and monitoring of progress/goals.


• Provide crisis intervention with students, families and campusstaff by providing immediate assessment, triage and therapeuticassistance to minimize the impact of trauma to students.


• Review the completed/conducted assessment for suicide,non-suicidal self-harm and harm to others that interns havecompleted. Collaborate with key parties to develop campus, studentand home safety plans.


• Review client data regularly to ensure that treatment anddocumentation is aligned with professional standards and clinicalbest practice.


• Guard client confidentiality by being knowledgeable of andadhering to both FERPA and HIPAA regulations.


• Provide referrals for services such as medical care,educational intervention, psychiatric treatment, etc. when neededand case management services to increase referred client/familyparticipation in services.


• Provide mental health consultation and be primary contact forschool and district staff regarding Response to Intervention(RtI)/Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), and Student SupportTeams (SST).


• Provide ongoing feedback to referring parties, school personneland clients.


• Assess mental health and social service needs to providesuccessful re-entry/transition to home campus for studentsreturning from DAEP, behavioral health hospitals and residentialtreatment placements.


• Develop and deliver professional development and communityoutreach topics on mental health wellness, social emotionaldevelopment, suicidality, threat assessments, behavior management,depression, anxiety and ADHD.


• Participate in staff meetings, case conferences, professionaldevelopment and training to increase clinical skills and improveoutcomes for critical cases.


• Complete, document, and submit all discipline-specificrequirements for maintaining licensure through applicable State ofTexas licensing boards.


• Comply with departmental policies, legal requirements, andprofessional, ethical, and quality of care standards.


• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job will require ability to drive a car for travel betweenlocations for purposes of consultation, training, meetings, oron-site demonstrations to Local Education Agencies/School Districtslocated in the RGV within the Region One ESC: Brownsville ISD,Edcouch-Elsa ISD, Harlingen CISD, McAllen ISD, Mission CISD,Pharr-San Juan-Alamo (PSJA) ISD, and Sharyland ISD whom the projecthas agreements with.
