Job summary

UNC Health in Chapel Hill is seeking a Clinical Support Tech I (Nursing Assistant I + Clerical) for the Cardiovascular Acute Care unit. This per diem, on-site role supports a 12-hour night shift schedule (7pm–7:30am) with weekend and holiday rotations.

The position emphasizes assisting with direct patient care, clerical duties, and unit operations to maintain patient flow and safety. Previous experience is not required, and BLS certification is expected.

Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or GED required; higher-level degree may satisfy.
• Licensure/Certification: Nurse Aide I Registry with North Carolina DHHS; Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Experience: Prior experience not required.
• Language/Skills: Fluent in English; able to develop computer skills if not competent.

Responsibilities

• Assists physicians and other health care providers with routine examinations and procedures, and procures equipment and supplies.
• Critically reviews patient care documentation and reports changes in patient condition to RN or physician.
• Performs clerical tasks: organize workload, greet visitors, review orders for clarity, transcribe orders, maintain medical records, and support PI audits and data entry.
• Provides clinical support: clean work areas, troubleshoot equipment, change linens, check inventory, transport patients/supplies/specimens, and orient new staff.
• Provide direct personal care per plan of care: bathing, dressing, feeding, ambulation, and measure vital signs. May collect specimens and perform simple wound care.
• Reinforce patient education and distribute educational materials as requested.

Clinical Support Tech I (Nursing Assistant I + Clerical) needed for Cardiovascular Acute Care located on 5 Anderson.Come join our dedicated and supportive team focused on excellence in patient care and outcomes.We are a cardiovascular acute care 12-bed unit that utilizes an interdisciplinary team approach to provide patient and family centered care to vascular, cardiothoracic surgeries, heart failure and cardiology.

The Clinical Support Tech I is a dual role of the Health Unit Coordinator and a Nursing Assistant I (NA I) and is a valuable team member as they work closely with our nurses to care for our complex patient population.

This is a Per Diem/at-will position requiring the ability to work a minimum of 24 hours every month; working 12-hour night shifts (7pm-7:30am), with weekend and holiday rotation.

Summary: Responsible for assisting the professional caregiver in the delivery of patient care, transporting patient and/or equipment, setting up and maintaining patient rooms and performing a wide range of clerical, transcription, and maintenance of the patient care unit desk area functions.

Responsibilities:

1. Assists physicians and other health care providers with routine examinations and procedures, as well as procurement of equipment and supplies.
2. Critically reviews patient care documentation making note of any significant changes in the patient's condition and make an immediate report to a registered nurse or physician.
3. Provides a variety of clerical tasks to include but not limited to organizing and prioritizing workload, greeting and directing visitors, researching information as requested by nurses and physicians, reviewing orders for logic and clarity, revising orders as requested by the nurse, answering the telephone/ patient call lights, transcribing physician orders, and maintaining medical records. Performs routine quality assurance audits, safety checks, and inventory of supplies. Provides administrative and clerical support including PI audits and data entry.
4. Provides clinical support assistance to include, but not limited to, cleaning the work area, maintaining office equipment, troubleshooting common software and hardware problems, changing linens, checking supply inventory, re-stocking supplies, transporting patients/ supplies/ specimens, and assisting in the orientation of new employees and students.
5. Provides direct personal care to patients as outlined in plan of care activities such as bathing, dressing, feeding, assisting with ambulation. Measures and records vital signs, and patient height and weight. May be responsible for specimen collection, skin preps/scrubs, catheter care, capillary blood glucose checks, simple wound care, range of motion exercises, and/or postural drainage.
6. Reinforces routine teaching given to patients by the registered nurse or physician and document patient understanding of instructions. Distributes patient education materials at the request of patients and/or health care providers.
