Description
The Clinical Shift Coordinator reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.
A clinically competent, registered, professional nurse who prescribes, delegates, and coordinates nursing care to the hospitalized patient through the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation. Effectively interacts with patients, significant others, and other health team members, while maintaining ANA standards of professional nursing practice. This nurse functions in a leadership role, overseeing daily unit operations, staff, and care delivery, utilizing a staff-focused leadership model.
Responsibilities

- Provides accurate information and timely updates to patients and customers. Addresses questions and concerns promptly or identifies appropriate persons and resources to do so. Provides directions or help to patients and customers in finding their way.

- Demonstrates proficiency as a staff nurse and serves as a role model and resource.
- Maintains awareness of unstable, complex, or high-risk patient conditions throughout the shift.
- Ensures appropriate assignment of care based on staff competency and patient acuity.
- Coordinates and monitors patient care to ensure safety.
- Collects, analyzes, and organizes patient care data for the unit.
- Oversees staff compliance with regulatory standards.
- Ensures services are adapted to reflect age, culture, gender, race, nationality, religion, etc.
- Oversees documentation of key elements for patient care and safety goals.
- Ensures initial admit orders are received by the end of the shift.
- Demonstrates knowledge of staffing requirements and ensures compliance with staffing matrix, consulting with the manager when variances are anticipated.
- Oversees accurate completion of daily charges to ensure appropriate revenue.
- Supports cost reduction and unit cost-effectiveness initiatives.
- Oversees staff scheduling and documents staffing information and justifications.
- Checks staff timekeeping and oversees compliance with attendance policies.
- Oversees documentation of occurrences and reports as appropriate.
- Ensures compliance with patient safety standards (fire safety, handwashing, crash cart checks, etc.).
- Oversees equipment accountability.
- Demonstrates effective communication skills with staff, physicians, patients, and families.
- Completes leader rounding and participates in staff meetings and huddles.
- Collaborates on staff orientation, assigns preceptors, and participates in team activities.
- Coordinates patient placement and fosters a welcoming environment for students and resource staff.
- Builds relationships with other units and physicians, understanding stakeholder complexities.
- Promotes collective accountability and performs weekend leadership rounding.
- Contributes to employee evaluations, disciplinary actions, and staff coaching.
- Participates in hiring, retention strategies, and competency assessments.
- Engages in quality improvement initiatives and supports evidence-based practice.
- Oversees environment of care and regulatory readiness.
- Accountable for implementing patient satisfaction tactics (Hourly Rounding, bedside shift report, discharge calls, AIDET).
- Monitors chart audit findings and follows up on improvements.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required:
- 3 years RN experience
- Licensed RN in Illinois
- American Heart Association BLS certification
- Telemetry competency
- Basic computer skills
- Effective communication in English
- Excellent customer service skills
- Knowledge of Illinois Practice Act and ANA standards
- Ability to utilize interpreter services effectively
Preferred:
- 2+ years in relevant clinical specialty
- BSN degree
- Certifications such as NRN, CV-RN, CHFN, CCRN, PCCN, CNML, NE-BC, etc. (within 2 years)
