The Neurosurgical Medical‑Surgical Unit (9T) at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center is a 36‑bed medical‑surgical unit highly specialized in neurosurgical spine patients as well as caring for neurologic patients transitioning from NSICU and Neuro Progressive whose acuity no longer requires intensive or step‑down level care. In addition, 9T serves as an overflow unit for the Stroke Medical Unit, providing comprehensive care for a diverse neurology and neurosurgery patient population. This is a fast‑paced, high‑acuity unit, especially for our fresh post‑operative spine patients, which allows for lower nurse‑to‑patient ratios to ensure optimal care. We are proud to be Joint Commission Certified in Spine Surgery—the first unit in the country to receive this designation. We’ve successfully completed two redesignations. Our team provides specialized care for a wide range of patient populations and advanced therapies at the medical surgical level, including: Spine Surgery or varying levels of complexity, relating to elective surgery, cancer, infection or trauma Craniotomy for tumor resection Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak repair Subdural hematomas Seizure/epilepsy patients Subarachnoid hemorrhage patients Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunts Ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke patients Neuromuscular diseases (Myasthenia Gravis, Guillain‑ Barre, Multiple Scleorsis) CNS infections NSICU patients transitioning to med/surg status Neuro Progressive patients transitioning to med/surg status Telemetry Intrathecal Baclofen Pump trial patients Post‑operative deep brain stimulator (DBS) patients The 9T team is a highly skilled, compassionate, and collaborative group of healthcare professionals dedicated to delivering exceptional clinical care while supporting patients and their loved ones through complex and challenging healthcare experiences.
