Job Summary

Summary
Following established policies, procedures, and study protocols, provides assistance on clinical research studies, including recruiting, evaluating, and consenting patients for studies; collecting and organizing patient data; scheduling patients for study visits; performing clinical tests such as phlebotomy, EKGs, etc.; maintaining and updating data generated by the study. Additionally, it provides input into determining study subject suitability and input into recruitment strategy. Performs data analysis, interpretation, QA/QC, and assists in completing reports and presentations.

Essential Functions
-Assists with determining the suitability of study subjects and acts as a resource for patients and families.
-Has input into recruitment strategies and may contribute to protocol recommendations.
-Administers scores and evaluates study questionnaires.
-Maintains research data, patient files, regulatory binders, and study databases.
-Performs data analysis and QA/QC checks and organizes and interprets data.
-Assists with preparation for annual review and assists PI in completing study reports and presentations.
-May assist with training and orientation of new staff members.

Summary

Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital (SRH) is recruiting a Research Assistant to join the Cardiovascular Lab’s: Exercise for Persons with Disabilities (ExPD) Program. The ExPD Program is a one-of-a-kind program that uses Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) in conjunction with adaptive rowing ergometers to provide a unique opportunity for people with spinal cord injuries or other neuromuscular conditions to engage in whole body exercise. This position includes CRC responsibilities involving several ongoing exercise training studies as well as managing the day to day operations in an adapted gym setting.The environment is uplifting, inspiring, and overall, a fun place to be!

The ideal candidate will have an educational background in exercise science or a similar field, and/or experience with exercise testing and training. This is a great opportunity for individuals who plan to pursue further education in an allied health field (PT, OT, etc.)

Key Responsibilities

EXERCISE TRAINING:

  • Contribute to the development of personalized exercise prescription for each client or research subject
  • Assist individuals with transfers and encourage and supervise their workouts
  • Orient and introduce clients and subjects to adapted rowing exercise training
  • Track training progress and compliance of clients and subjects
  • Prepare equipment for next scheduled user
  • Troubleshoot issues with exercise equipment
  • Answer or appropriately redirect questions from clients and subjects

EXERCISE TESTING:

  • Assist with maximal exercise testing
  • Explain maximal exercise testing procedures to clients and subjects
  • Perform blood pressure measurements
  • Conduct Resting EKG testing
  • Administer questionnaires

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Maintain exercise testing and training supplies and equipment
  • General administrative duties and paperwork
  • Schedule appointments
  • Assist with supervision of undergraduate interns
  • Keep an acceptable level of tidiness in the exercise rooms
  • Create and provide progress reports to clients and subject

Qualifications and Experience

Education/Degree

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science or a related field strongly preferred.

Preferred

  • Master’s Degree in scientific field related to the lab’s aims and methods of investigation is preferred for Clinical Research Coordinator II.

Experience

Required

  • Direct clinical research experience
  • Knowledge of exercise testing protocols, exercise training paradigms, and exercise prescriptions.

Skills

  • Computer proficiency required. Microsoft office applications preferred with ability to learn new software.
