Summary:
Under the general supervision of the laboratory director Dr. Carskadon and the daily direct supervision of the project coordinator, the Sleep Research Assistant (SRA) performs duties such as preparing forms, recruiting participants, interacting with participants and their families, and supporting research projects. Responsibilities include working directly with participants, e.g., preparing for overnight studies and assisting during in-lab sessions.
Responsibilities:
The SRA must be comfortable working with and interacting with research participants and their families, including children, adolescents, and adults. Maintaining confidentiality and accuracy is essential. The position involves attending study planning meetings, preparing lab equipment, applying polysomnographic equipment (EOG, EEG, EKG, EMG), performing physiological calibrations, monitoring recordings, ensuring participant safety, downloading and archiving data, and scoring sleep stages and physiological events using R&K standards.
This full-time position requires excellent people skills, enthusiasm, organization, creativity, and determination. The candidate must manage time efficiently, as the role involves working early mornings, late nights, weekends, and possibly extended hours for orientations or lab tours. Personal transportation is necessary for equipment or participant pickups.
While usually assigned to a specific project, the SRA may assist other teams as needed. Flexibility for extended hours is required.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:
Bachelor’s degree in any life science field.
EXPERIENCE:
Experience with human volunteers and recruitment; experience with physiological recordings is a plus. Familiarity with data management and Macintosh computers is beneficial. Training will be provided.
INDEPENDENT ACTION:
Performs independently within department policies, referring complex issues to supervisors.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Assists and supervises research students and summer apprentices during data collection, ensuring adherence to protocols and proper supervision of participants and equipment.
