Responsibilities

• Develops productive working relationships with frontline clinical staff
• Mentors new staff and preceptors to support role success
• Manages unit-based onboarding and orientation processes
• Teaches care management, assessment, planning, and discharge planning
• Serves as a resource for patients, nurses, and other disciplines
• Promotes patient education for frontline staff
• Participates in Performance Improvement projects
• Engages with professional and community organizations
• Develops coaching and feedback skills to support UPMC Experience initiatives
• Education/training may occur outside traditional hours as needed

Job description

The Clinical Professional Development Specialist offers the opportunity to shape the development of nursing staff at UPMC Children’s Hospital through onboarding, orientation, education mentoring and professional development. The position provides a high level of collaboration with frontline teams and leaders, involvement in quality and performance improvement initiatives, support professional growth and organizational engagement. The schedule is primarily Monday - Friday, with flexibility to meet educational needs across shifts. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced nurse who is passionate about education, coaching and influencing patient care outcomes.

Responsibilities:

• Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally by building teams and relationships through mentoring, support and positive communication working directly with frontline clinical staff
• Conveys information and ideas clearly through a variety of media to individuals or groups in a manner that engages the audience and helps them understand and retain the message.
• Serve as a formal and informal mentor for new clinical staff members and mentor new preceptors to be successful in their role.
• Responsible for unit-based onboarding and orientation.
• Teach staff how to manage the care of patients including assessment, interdisciplinary planning, implementation, evaluation of patient care, teaching and discharge planning. Identify, communicate and respond to meet the learning needs of clinical staff.
• Serves as a resource/consultant for patients, nursing staff and other disciplines in area of specialty.
• Promotes patient education needs for frontline clinical staff
• Participate in department-based Performance Improvement projects.
• Participate in professional and community organizations.
• Develops professional coaching and feedback skills to support and validate UPMC Experience initiatives not limited to Bedside Shift Report, Hourly Rounding, AIDET, etc.
• Training/education of clinical staff during non-traditional work hours may be required based on the needs of assigned unit
