Overview:

The Emergency Department Clinical Pharmacy Specialist is an integral member of the healthcare team, providing advanced pharmacotherapeutic expertise to ensure optimal patient outcomes in the Emergency Department (ED). This role involves direct patient care, interdisciplinary collaboration, medication therapy management, leadership and education initiatives within the ED setting.

Qualifications:

  1. Education: Minimum requirement of Bachelor of Science (BS) or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) in pharmacy degree.
  2. Licensure: Requires a current pharmacist license from state of practice.
  3. Experience: Completed PGY-1 or 3 years hospital pharmacy experience in specialty area.
  4. Preferred Experience: Completed PGY-2 in specialty area.
  5. Certifications: Eligible for Board of Pharmacy Specialties certification (preferred in area of specialty practice).

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Clinical Expertise and Patient Care:
  2. Collaborate with ED physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers to design, implement, and monitor individualized medication therapy plans.
  3. Provide real-time recommendations during medical emergencies, including trauma resuscitations, sepsis management, and cardiac arrests (e.g., ACLS and PALS protocols).
  4. Monitor and optimize drug therapy for acute and critically ill patients.
  5. Ensure appropriate dosing, especially for high-risk and narrow therapeutic index medications.
