POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for supervising the filling and dispensing of medication orders including the proper handling,usageand storage of medications. Provides clinical services and drug information to physicians, residents and nurses ensuringappropriate medicationusage. Participates in the training of pharmacy technicians and co-op students.

Engages in quality improvement projects which are specifically related toanarea of pharmacyexpertiseor interest.

Worksrelatively independently, under general supervision, and within the limits of established pharmacy policies and procedures.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Reviews and approves, prior to dispensing a drug, allinitialandroutineordersensuringthe therapeutic appropriateness of the medication order, and its relative cost effectiveness.
  • Overseesthe activities of the intravenous admixture area, and reviews and approves, prior to dispensing, all new orders prepared by the sterile products room.
  • Provide drug information to and consult with physicians and nurses regardingappropriate drugtherapy.
  • Supervises approximately twopharmacytechnicians, and one to three Pharmacy Interns, whoare responsible forfilling and checking unit-dosemedicationscarts, inventory control, initialinterpretationand input intocomputer ofmedication orders.
  • Participates in daily patient rounds to provide input as to the selection and rational approach to the pharmacotherapy of the patient's disease including pharmacologic and pharmacokinetic principles, toxic and side effects of drugs as well as individual dosage recommendations for the drug or drugs to be administered.
  • Participates in the orientation,hiringand training of all new personnel.
  • Participatesoninter andintradepartmentalcommitteesin order tointegrate and coordinate the activities of Pharmacy, Nursing, UnitCoordinationand the physician staff.
  • Participatesin the orientation and training of all new personnel.
  • Interviews patients to obtainaccurateand comprehensive patient medical history for the patient's medical record including prescribed medications, over-the-counter medicationsregularly used, adverse reactions to drugs and allergies.
  • Participates in investigational drug studies through assisting in the design of dispensing protocols,maintainingdrug records and inventory control, formulating dosages,monitoringpatientsand ensuring compliance with FDA and DEA regulations.
  • Prepares drug monographs and review of drugs requested for admission to Hospital's Formulary.Assistsin reviewing the cost of drugs and making necessary adjustments, asrequired.
  • Acts as a preceptor to pharmacy students and residents.
  • Conducts in-service education lectures for the medical staff, nurses, pharmacists, students, and other health care personnelregardingdrugs,proceduresand policies.
  • Assistsin the formulation and continual updating of departmental policies andproceduresand pharmacy-nursing policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to collaborate and effectively communicate with physicians,nursesand other health care professionals.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE/TECHNICAL/OTHER:

  • Education: Graduate of college of Pharmacy accredited by ACPE or equivalent.
  • Experience: At least2yearshospital pharmacy experienceorPGY1residencycompletion.
  • Certification/Licensure: Current license to practice Pharmacy in Massachusettsandmaintainall required CE by the hire date.
  • Software/Hardware: Preferred: Pyxis, Meditech, Microsoft Office.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Shallbe accountable forappropriate drugtherapy monitoring.
  • Shallbe accountable formaintainingthe confidentiality and security of all hospital-related, medical staff andpatient relateddata and information.
  • Shall be accountable for abiding by all relevant hospital policies and procedures.

Compensation Range:

$52.40- $75.96
