Responsibilities

  • Contact physicians regarding patient/order issues and ensure proper patient registration and billing.
  • Handle multiple specimen types including blood, tissue, urine, and other body fluids.
  • Provide professional customer service to clinicians and clients by phone and in person.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance with CAP, OSHA, JCAHO, CMS, ODH and lab policies.
  • Train students and new employees.
  • Maintain competencies and fulfill educational requirements.

Job Description Summary

This intermediate level position works with multiple computer systems and performs specimen processing duties including accessioning, determining specimen viability, identifying and resolving labeling/identification discrepancies and contacting physicians regarding issues with patients/orders, patient registration, proper patient billing including the use of ICD‑9 codes and pertinent knowledge of commercial and government payers. The role handles blood, tissue, fecal matter, sputum, urine, spinal fluid and other body fluids. Specimens may be contaminated with infectious diseases including HIV and other blood borne pathogens.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Accessioning, determining specimen viability, identifying and resolving labeling/identification discrepancies, contacting physicians regarding patient/order issues, patient registration, and proper billing including ICD‑9 coding and knowledge of commercial and government payers.
  • Collect, process and handle multiple specimen types including blood, tissue, fecal matter, sputum, urine, spinal fluid and other body fluids.
  • Provide customer service to clinicians and clients, communicating professionally by telephone and in person, and using service recovery when necessary.
  • Ensure adherence to regulatory compliance as defined by CAP, OSHA, JCAHO, CMS, ODH and laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Train students and new employees.
  • Maintain competencies, fulfill mandatory educational requirements, and perform miscellaneous tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED (required).
Additional Qualifications
  • Experience in laboratory or hospital setting.
  • Superior customer service skills, medical terminology, basic anatomy, advanced computer skills, ICD‑9 coding, specimen handling.
  • Knowledge of phlebotomy and critical‑thinking skills.
  • Independent and self‑directing.
  • 1+ years of phlebotomy experience.
  • 1–2 years of practical experience in a reference laboratory, hospital laboratory, or physician office.
