Job summary

Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC seeks a Clinical Nursing Administrator to serve as the on-site nursing leadership presence when hospital administration is off-site. You will coordinate staffing across units, guide patient placement and flow, and ensure safety standards 24/7.

Responsibilities include real-time staffing decisions, policy interpretation, and acting as a clinical resource while maintaining customer service and professional demeanor.

Qualifications

  • BSN from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current Registered Nurse license in the District of Columbia.
  • BLS certification through the American Heart Association.
  • ACLS certification.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of hospital-based nursing experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of nursing leadership experience in a hospital setting.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Critical thinking, analytical, and organization/time-management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence others.
  • Resourcefulness—recognizes problems and identifies solutions by tapping resources, staff, and best practices.
  • Ability to create trusting relationships and build community.
  • Ability to make decisions and direct others in a dynamic environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Effective delegation and appropriate use of authority to provide timely coaching to staff.
  • Knowledge of infectious disease and worker-safety program requirements for a healthcare setting.

  • Maintain efficient utilization of nursing resources, partnering with unit leadership, charge nurses, and non-clinical departments to evaluate and resolve current and potential staffing concerns.
  • Coordinate patient placement, the admission status process, and the facilitation of direct admissions during routine and surge situations.
  • Interpret administrative and departmental policies and procedures for staff, serving as an administrative liaison, clinical resource, and role model.
  • Triage operational issues and clinical areas of concern, escalating to the Administrator On-Call (AOC) when needed.
  • Assist in resolving issues involving physicians, patients, families, and staff, and conduct investigations of incidents and occurrences during your shift, reporting to the on-call leadership team.
  • Participate in hourly rounding and ensure compliance with the same.
  • Ensure services are provided within the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of HUH, modeling strong customer service, professional appearance, and overall professional demeanor.

Job description

Role Summary

As a Clinical Nursing Administrator at Howard University Hospital, you are the on-site nursing leadership presence when hospital administration is off-site — coordinating staffing across every patient care unit, guiding patient placement and flow, and serving as the clinical and administrative resource that keeps the hospital running safely around the clock. Required Qualifications

Position Details

Pay & Schedule

The anticipated annual salary range for this position is $110,000 – $125,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is a full-time, exempt position working three (3) 12-hour day shifts per week (7:30 AM – 8:00 PM, 36 hours per week), including every other weekend and every other holiday, with occasional night coverage as needed.
