Job summary

The University of Utah College of Nursing seeks a registered nurse to provide clinical support in Juvenile Justice and Youth Services ( JJYS ) facilities. This nurse-led clinic emphasizes independent practice, teamwork, and quality care for adolescents in secure and detention settings.

You will assess patients, implement clinical interventions, develop care plans, and collaborate with the clinical team across JJYS facilities from Provo to Ogden.

Qualifications

  • Current RN license to practice in Utah (or eligible)
  • RQI Healthcare Provider credential obtained within 30 days of hire
  • Interstate Compact license maintained if residency not changed to Utah
  • ACLs/PALS/NRP within one year may be required or substituted with related work experience

Responsibilities

  • Assess and identify patient health problems via nursing assessment and clinical information
  • Plan and implement evidence-based interventions to manage patient health problems
  • Document care plans and nursing process in patient records
  • Evaluate responses and adjust the care plan as needed within nursing scope
  • Educate patients and families on post-discharge care and participate in care meetings
  • Maintain a safe and therapeutic care environment
  • Provide guidance to healthcare team to ensure quality patient care
  • Stay current on advances in nursing care through education
  • Provide direct patient care under established protocols and orders
  • Apply knowledge of medications, infection control, and safety in crisis situations
  • Participate in total quality management to improve patient outcomes

Job Summary

The University of Utah College of Nursing seeks a registered nurse to provide clinical support in Juvenile Justice and Youth Services ( JJYS ) facilities. This position offers a unique opportunity to work in a nurse-led clinic that emphasizes independent practice, teamwork, and quality care for adolescents in secure and detention settings.

In this role, you will assess patients, implement clinical interventions, develop care plans, and make a real impact on the lives of youth in JJYS custody. This position is based includes JJYS facilities from Provo to Ogden, with regular collaboration across the clinical team and facility partners.

We seek a self-motivated, dependable, and organized nurse who is comfortable serving as the primary on-site clinical staff member during scheduled hours. This role requires strong nursing judgment, proactive communication, and the ability to manage routine clinic responsibilities independently while maintaining close connection with the broader care team. A nurse practitioner provides support remotely; the successful candidate is expected to communicate clearly, identify follow-up needs, and consult or elevate concerns when additional guidance is needed.

Essential Functions
  1. Identifies and assesses actual or potential patient health problems through nursing assessment, patient interaction, and review of relevant clinical information.

  2. Assesses, plans, and implement evidence-based interventions to prevent, manage, and resolve patient health problems.

  3. Formulates care plans for specific patients and documents the nursing process in patient’s record.

  4. Evaluates patient response to interventions and recommends or implements modifications to the plan of care as appropriate and within nursing scope.

  5. Develops and participates in educating patients, their families, or significant others about post discharge care programs. Initiates patient care meetings with the health care team to revise the plan of care as the patient’s condition warrants.

  6. Maintains a safe and therapeutic patient care environment.

  7. Provides guidance and direction to members of the health care team to ensure quality patient care.

  8. Keeps current on advances in nursing care by participating in educational programs.

  9. Provides and oversees direct patient care in accordance with established nursing protocol and providers’ orders.

  10. Utilizes knowledge of medications, procedures, infection control, and safety precaution; and initiates appropriate interventions in crisis situations.

  11. Participates in total quality management to positively affect patient and system outcomes to improve care.

  12. Nurses are expected to take and successfully obtain the Certified Correctional Healthcare Professional ( CCHP ) certification offered by the National Commission on Correctional Healthcare ( NCCHC ) within a year of starting. Supplies to study for the test will be provided and the exam cost will be reimbursed after successfully obtaining certification.

Minimum Qualifications

Required

Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.

Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah, or obtain one within 90 days of hire under the interstate compact if switching residency to State of Utah. Must maintain current Interstate Compact (multi-state) license if residency is not being changed to Utah.

Preferred

Some positions may require additional certificates such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support ( ACLS ), Pediatric Advanced Life Support ( PALS ), or Neonatal Resuscitation Program ( NRP ) within one year of hire or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements.
