General Summary

The Clinical Nurse II (Per Diem and LTA) is responsible for providing direct and indirect patient and family care in inpatient and approved surgical and ambulatory care areas. The nurse is expected to perform competently within the patient care responsibilities of a registered nurse in the assigned setting. The nurse delegates and supervises care according to the Nurse Practice Act and professional nursing standards, collaborating with the clinical team using critical pathways or multidisciplinary plans of care.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The Clinical Nurse II systematically collects and assesses data with the multidisciplinary team to provide therapeutic care. The nurse follows the prescribed care plan, documents progress, and communicates effectively with team members to ensure continuity of care. Responsibilities include:

  • Providing age-specific nursing care and eliciting patient and family participation.
  • Evaluating and documenting patient responses to interventions.
  • Collaborating with team members and establishing positive interpersonal relationships.
  • Using equipment, medicines, and modalities skillfully, demonstrating knowledge of their purposes and outcomes.

Service/Quality

  • Facilitating cost-effective use of resources and respecting cultural beliefs and practices.
  • Demonstrating trust, respect, and caring attitudes.
  • Participating in performance improvement, evidence-based practice, or research activities.
  • Ensuring regulatory compliance and participating in unit activities.

Unit Operations

  • Supporting charge nurse decisions and performing charge duties as needed.
  • Adhering to hospital policies for safety and security.
  • Supporting the principles of a Healthy Work Environment as per AACN guidelines.

Professional Development

  • Serving as preceptor, coach, and mentor; contributing to staff development.
  • Completing educational requirements and maintaining competencies.

Patient safety is paramount. Nurses are expected to:

  • Address safety risks proactively.
  • Report adverse events and near misses.
  • Identify and communicate potential risks.

Education & Experience

  • Unencumbered RN license in Maryland or Nurse Compact License.
  • BSN preferred.
  • Recent (past 12 months) hospital nursing experience in a comparable setting.
  • Maintain 10 contact hours of education biennially.

License and Certification

  • Med-Surg/Telemetry
  • BLS, NIHSS, and other specified certifications as per unit requirements.

*All BLS and ACLS certifications must be through the American Heart Association. PALS and NRP certifications must be through the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Effective communication and confidentiality skills.
  • Ability to evaluate patient responses and participate in team efforts.
  • Proficiency with computer systems for managing patient information.
