Job summary

The Clinical Laboratory at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, part of UCSF, seeks a licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist to perform microbiology testing and quality control.

You will isolate and identify bacteria, perform serology and molecular diagnostics, and document results in the lab information system. This role requires a California CL license, a Bachelor's degree in a science field, strong communication, and the ability to work independently in a high-volume setting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in a scientific field.
• California CL License or equivalent license.
• Ability to work independently under pressure and stay organized.
• Strong verbal and written communication regarding clinical results.
• Experience with a clinical laboratory computer system.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine isolation, interpretation, identification, and/or antibiotic susceptibility testing of all types of specimens for bacteria, mycobacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites using standard and, on occasion, new methods.
• Perform serology procedures and molecular diagnostic tests for determining diagnosis of bacterial, fungal, parasitic, viral, or autoimmune diseases.
• Prioritize and organize own workload to expedite patient results.
• Work independently with minimal supervision.
• Be accountable for own work responsibilities.
• Accurately and professionally document all work and enter into laboratory computer system.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area, including care and maintenance of instruments.
• Follow all safety precautions and procedures mandated by regulatory agencies and in compliance with UC and ZSFG department policies.
• Give phone reports and interpretations to doctors and other hospital personnel; communicate clearly with laboratory staff and hospital personnel; participate as a team member.
• Teach laboratory procedures to Lab Medicine Residents, new employees, CLS students, medical students, and others who may rotate through the sections of the laboratory.
• Receive, timestamp, and accession incoming specimens into computer system for microbiology testing; inoculate specimens onto culture media for bacterial, fungal, viral, and mycobacterial cultures.
• Work on assigned special projects pertinent to the development of the Microbiology lab and other duties as assigned.
