Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and supervise the technical activities of the Microbiology Unit, including Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Mycology, Parasitology, Immunology, Media Preparation, and housekeeping sections.
• Participate in complex and critical analyses and evaluation of results.
• Instruct other technologists and laboratory trainees in proper procedures and techniques of microbiological tests; give lectures and examinations; evaluate the performance of laboratory trainees assigned to the unit.
• Maintain quality control in the unit; check operating efficiency of laboratory equipment and instruments; supervise and participate in the preparation and maintenance of related laboratory records and reports.
• Evaluate current methods and procedures for adequacy, accuracy, clinical significance, and cost; make modifications as required; develop procedures, norms, and standards for new tests; keep current with new developments in the field by reviewing literature and attending seminars.
• Maintain supply and equipment control in the Microbiology Unit; order supplies and maintain inventories; prepare and submit budget requests for capital items.
• Consult with pathologists and other medical staff members on problems related to the unit; consult with the Laboratory Director on all new procedures.
• Represent the Laboratory at meetings and conferences; serve on the San Joaquin General Hospital Infection Control Committee.
• Collect specimens from patients for tests and examinations; assist in the administration of the Clinical Laboratory on a rotating basis with other supervising technologists in the absence of the Administrative Clinical Laboratory Technologist.

Qualifications

• Experience: Two years equivalent to Clinical Microbiologist.
• Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid license issued by the State of California, Department of Health as a Clinical Microbiologist, Clinical Laboratory Technologist, or Clinical Laboratory Scientist limited to Clinical Microbiology.

Knowledge

• The principles, methods, materials, techniques, and terminology of microbiology and immunology as related to medical technology.
• Recent developments, current literature, and sources of information in medical technology.
• The principles and methods of supervision and training.
• Basic administration of laboratory units.
