This job receives and prepares specimens according to standard protocols and procedures; performs laboratory tests and calculations to provide data for diagnosis and treatment of disease; performs quality control procedures, evaluates test performance and results; calibrates, maintains, and monitors equipment used in analytical determinations; performs phlebotomy procedures as appropriate; and maintains confidentiality of patient-related information.

Education

Required - Bachelor's Degree in medical technology, medical laboratory science, clinical laboratory science, or chemical, physical, or biological science. Copy of Transcript.

Required - None.

Certifications

Required - Current license in the state of practice (if applicable).
Required - ASCP, AMT, or AAB certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist. Incumbents certified by ASCP on or after January 1, 2004, must complete the ASCP Certification Maintenance Program.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Must have computer skills and dexterity for data entry and retrieval of patient information. Proficiency with Windows applications and keyboard.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for presenting information clearly and professionally to individuals throughout the patient care process.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good judgment in performing duties and conflict resolution.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
Job Duties
  • Performs, develops, and interprets routine and/or specialized laboratory testing independently and accurately within established time frames.
  • Performs, analyzes, and records quality control and instrument maintenance/troubleshooting, making judgments concerning results, and taking appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision. Escalates when results are out of control and documents corrective actions.
  • Adheres to regulatory guidelines and maintains awareness of accreditation standards by reviewing current checklists/standards. Follows safety protocols, OIG compliance, and proficiency testing procedures.
  • Participates in performance improvement initiatives by assisting in data collection and analysis; supports business development and cost reduction by managing supplies and reagents inventory.
  • Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, respecting privacy, introducing procedures, requesting permissions, and communicating effectively.
  • Other duties as required.

Physical and Environmental Demands

The physical demands include exerting force to move objects, working in a healthcare setting with potential exposure to blood and body fluids, and working in areas with occupational risks for exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials.
