Job description

NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is a 306-bed medical center, providing care to residents of eastern Long Island. The hospital facility is home to the Knapp Cardiac Care Center—an advanced heart disease diagnostic and treatment facility—as well as a modern ambulatory surgical pavilion with specialized services including women’s imaging, a sleep laboratory, and bariatric surgery. Our Provisional Level 2 Trauma Center delivers comprehensive and specialized care for patients with traumatic injuries. The Stroke Center at NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is designated by the New York State Department of Health as a Primary Stroke Center, with expert neurologists available to provide treatment 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Additionally, NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk has multiple outpatient sites, including an outpatient wound care center, a hemodialysis center, and various primary care and specialty offices.

Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Laboratory Technologist - Full Time Nights 12AM-8PM; rotating schedule/weekends - Laboratory SIGN ON BONUS AVAILABLE. Sign-on Bonus starting at $9,000; factored based on experience.

In this role, the successful candidate will perform various clinical laboratory tests in one or more sections of the Laboratory Department under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures. This role involves analyzing and interpreting test results, ensuring their accuracy, repeating tests as necessary, especially those yielding abnormal or atypical results, and notifying appropriate personnel of such results.

Job Responsibilities:

Performance Expectations: Technical Skills

1. Applies a basic level of knowledge of methods and clinical relevance of tests performed in their area of responsibility.
2. Performs all preventive maintenance on schedule in accordance with laboratory procedure.
3. Recognizes abnormal instrument or test performance and does not release patient results until the situation is corrected.
4. Performs basic troubleshooting procedures and seeks assistance when necessary.
5. Monitors reagent and supply inventory and informs supervisor of needs.
6. Works effectively in high-pressure situations without losing composure or making mistakes.
7. Organizes work well for others to easily take over in their absence.
8. Verifies and processes specimens in an organized and timely manner.
9. Can perform phlebotomy when required with expertise.
10. Follows all procedures accurately.
11. Performs all test procedures accurately.

Performance Expectations: Quality Assurance

1. Performs Quality Control according to Laboratory protocol.
2. Documents Quality Control and corrective action when needed.
3. Follows laboratory procedure when Q.C. fails.
4. Applies knowledge of test interrelationships to assure results are accurate.

4. Displays knowledge of mathematical and statistical calculations to evaluate Quality Control and calculate patient results.

Other Functions and Performance Expectations

1. Maintains a consistent pattern of attendance.
2. Reports to assigned area on time for scheduled shift.
3. Adheres to hospital/department dress code.
4. Completes all hospital requirements at designated time (i.e., annual assessments, educational, MedNetTra).
5. Conforms to policies regarding confidentiality of information.
6. Follows call-in procedure when sick, late, or absent.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify, you must have a BS in Medical Technology which includes a clinical internship or BS in a related discipline with one year supervised clinical laboratory experience.
NYS Education Department Clinical Laboratory Technologist License or Eligible.
Professional accreditation preferred.
Analytical skills necessary to analyze data and perform mathematical calculations.
Basic knowledge of computer fundamentals and experience with laboratory information systems.
Technical skills necessary to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot instrumentation and perform routine and complex testing.
Effectively communicates detailed data and procedures.
Works effectively in high-pressure situations.
Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
Performs supervisory responsibilities.
