Job Description - Clinical Laboratory Technologist (2500542)
POSITION SUMMARY:
- Clinical Laboratory Technologists perform various biochemical, immunoassay, microscopic and bacteriological tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease.
- Prepare microscopic slides as necessary. Study slides using microscopic techniques and/or subject specimens to automatic analyzing equipment or manual techniques to perform qualitative and quantitative analyses.
- Verify specimen acceptability. Identify and label all specimens accurately including aliquots. Retain and store specimens properly for further reference or use.
- Prepare, calibrate and verify performance of laboratory instrumentation. Perform instrument maintenance as required. Troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation problems.
- Uses clinical judgment and knowledge to report laboratory test results using laboratory information systems or utilizing manual report forms (in case of computer downtime). Ensure critical values are called immediately.
- Able to troubleshoot and utilize problem-solving skills when necessary. Notify Laboratory supervisors of any problems, unresolved issues or customer complaints timely.
- Perform and record quality control results. Apply appropriate quality control rules to determine test run acceptability.
- Run correlation, linearity and proficiency samples as requested by the Laboratory Supervisor.
- Participate in laboratory and hospital performance improvement projects and objectives.
- Ally principles of customer service to all aspects of daily work.
- Train, orient, mentor and supervise new employees and/or students in the laboratory.
- Follow established hospital, departmental, safety, environmental and infection control policies and procedures.
- Comply with all regulatory requirements and maintain all records as needed by Joint Commission, College of American Pathologists, and New York State Department of Health agencies including quality control, quality assurance, equipment maintenance records, annual education, and employee health assessments.
- Follow HIPAA and hospital compliance policies.
- Perform other duties as requested by the Manager or Supervisor.
LEAD RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Direct and assist other Clinical Laboratory Technologists, Laboratory Technicians, Trainees, and Phlebotomists as needed.
- Make staff adjustments as needed to accommodate workload and/or sick calls.
- Problem-solving and troubleshooting any issues that arise in the absence of the laboratory supervisor and/or laboratory administration.
- Report directly to the supervisor any problems or issues within the operation or organization which may affect the integrity of their respective section.
REQUIREMENTS, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Qualified by New York State Department of Health as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist. Valid NYSED Clinical Laboratory Technologist license or permit.
- Successful completion of a full course of study that meets all academic requirements for a bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science or related science from a college or university.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Exposed to the danger of infection or harm from pathogenic material or chemicals. May be exposed to low-level radiation. Occasional prolonged standing or walking. Subject to eyestrain.

Anticipated Pay Range:
The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established based on relevant experience.

Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements:
- Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s Employee Health Services.
- Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
- Successfully complete a 4-panel drug screen.
- Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
- Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).
Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.
