UW Medicine in Seattle is seeking a Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT) 2 for the Phlebotomy & Specimen Processing Services team at Harborview Medical Center. You will coordinate send-out testing, handle specimen issues, and ensure proper processing and billing of tests.

The role includes phlebotomy duties, maintaining lab materials, and training staff while collaborating with the LMR, CAST, and referral labs to ensure timely, accurate results for patients.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent plus two years of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experience.
• MA-P certification with Washington State DOH or will obtain within 180 days of start date.
• Two years of laboratory experience in a hospital or clinical setting preferred.

Job DescriptionWho we’re looking for:The UW Medicine - Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology (DLMP) in Seattle, WA has a fantastic opportunity for a Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT) 2 with the Phlebotomy & Specimen Processing Services (PSPS) Team at Harborview Medical Center .Are you passionate about science and ready to make a real impact on patient care? As a CLT 2, you will play a vital role on the PSPS Team by coordinating workflow of the preanalytical and technical activities for the Department’s send-out testing to referral labs. You will also handle problem resolution of specimens and collaborate with the Clinical Administrative Support Team and Lab Medicine Residents to ensure appropriate processing, shipping, and billing of undefined send-out tests. Finally, you will engage in CLT 1 duties, which include phlebotomy and specimen collection.Work schedule:100% FTE.Work schedule Sunday – Thursday.Day shiftWhat you’ll contribute:Prepares packages and ensures that send-out samples are forwarded to the appropriate reference lab for testing requested.Maintains an awareness of and the ability to use the resources to provide instruction on the collection and processing of specialized and targeted tests that are not performed by the UW Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology but must be sent to outside laboratories. These can be low volume tests or highly specialized and rare tests. This includes communicating specific collection instructions to the patient as needed.Responsible for maintaining higher than average awareness of the chemicals and agents needed to preserve certain tests. These chemicals may include Acetic Acid, 6N HCL, 6N HNO, Boric Acid, and others. CLT 2 is responsible for aiding other staff in the preparation of these collection containers as necessary.Responsible for maintaining an adequate stock of special collection materials needed for referral testing, including but not limited to, un-expired stock of chemicals, agents and special collection kits needed for the preservation of send-out tests from SCCA, UWMC and Roosevelt labs. These supplies include, but are not limited to, Serotonin tubes, trace metal tubes, Somatostatin kits, TRH preservative tubes, Z-Tubes for Neurotensin, and Cambridge GI tubes for Neurokinin and Pancreatin. Kits include Viracor, Osford, and Prometheus and any others as needed.Builds and maintains a working relationship with the referral laboratories as needed to facilitate the send-out process. In addition to the Mayo Clinic, the primary reference lab that is utilized by the UW Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology, the CLT 2 is responsible for sending specimens to all reference laboratories as needed and approved by the Laboratory Medicine Resident (LMR).Maintains files, reports, and results in an organized and accessible manner.Performs continual monitoring of lab reports and pending log monitors (PLM) to verify consistency of service and troubleshooting issues.Maintains the required annual certifications needed for the shipment of hazardous materials and dry ice.Trains and supports new and existing staff on the performance of reference laboratory send-out activities and problem resolution.Responds promptly, courteously, and professionally to phone and written inquiries about test information, results, and other related information.Expected to solve problems relayed from the CLT 1 group, providers and other divisions in an efficient, timely, thorough, and accurate manner, including the appropriate documentation in hc1.Demonstrates the ability to solve problems to expedite processing of specimens that are received mislabeled, unlabeled, missing patient data, insufficient quantity, etc. and contact ordering locations as required. This is to ensure the timeliness and accuracy of these procedures, which are critical to patient care.Provides constructive and valuable suggestions for improvement. Responsible for helping the general SPS staff maintain some awareness of the send-out process and continually updating procedures.Serves as a resource to general PSPS staff with respect to the Lab Information System (LIS) and Clinical Information System (CIS).Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized, and work as a team member to provide maximum coverage and quality service in all stressful situations.Promotes and contributes to the development of teamwork within PSPS and working relationships between PSPS and other lab divisions.
