Job description

Summary

Develops, performs, evaluates, interprets, correlates, and validates the accuracy of laboratory procedures and results in line with current laboratory regulatory requirements. Work may be in various specialties such as chemistry, microbiology, immunology, hematology, and immunohematology.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. § 7403 (f).
  • Education: A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Foreign Education: Education completed outside the U.S. must be deemed at least equivalent to that gained in a U.S. program by an acceptable evaluation agency or meet specific certification eligibility criteria.
  • Certification: Must possess one of the following: Generalist certification as an MLS or MT by ASCP BOC or AMT, or categorical/specialist certification by ASCP or AMT. Candidates covered by the Grandfathering Provision may qualify if they meet specific criteria.

Grade Determinations:

  • GS-07: Experience none beyond basic requirements.
  • GS-09: 1 year of creditable experience or master's degree/2 years graduate education plus demonstrated knowledge and abilities.
  • GS-11: 1 year of experience or 3 years of graduate education or Ph.D., with demonstrated advanced knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Preferred Experience: 2+ years in general laboratory work including Blood Bank, Hematology, Chemistry, and Micro/Molecular, especially for night shift positions. Recent graduates with relevant degrees and certification eligibility within 2 years are also preferred.

Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, finger use, walking/standing, bending, vision, color discrimination, and hearing.

Duties
  • Perform standard, advanced, and complex laboratory procedures, recognize deviations, analyze problems, and communicate critical results.
  • Evaluate and solve specimen collection and processing issues, maintain equipment, perform calibrations, and document quality control activities.
  • Ensure compliance with biosafety, biosecurity, and regulatory standards, and communicate effectively with healthcare team members.
  • Organize work, set priorities, and perform additional duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Friday through Monday, 10:00 pm to 8:00 am, rotating holidays.
