Responsibilities

The laboratory technologist performs waived, moderate, or highly complex tests authorized by CLIA, Business & Professions Code Section 1204, utilizing skills appropriate to their education, training, and experience. Responsibilities include:

  1. Adhering to laboratory procedures for collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of patient results.
  2. Following quality control policies and documenting corrective actions when test systems deviate from performance standards.
  3. Identifying and resolving problems affecting test performance or notifying supervisors when necessary.
  4. Performing a variety of laboratory procedures across disciplines such as Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, and Immunology, using manual and automated methods.
  5. Performing and documenting maintenance on instruments and equipment as needed.
  6. Reviewing patient results for accuracy before reporting.
  7. Recognizing age-specific differences in expected results from newborns to geriatrics.
  8. Ensuring proficiency testing samples are tested appropriately and collaborating with other labs only after reporting results.
  9. Performing venipuncture or capillary puncture on patients across all age groups as required.
  10. Assisting in the development and maintenance of laboratory policies and procedures.
  11. Adhering to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources policies.
  12. In the absence of a supervisor, may serve as Lead Tech, overseeing the section or department during their shift.
  13. May be assigned responsibilities related to Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Point of Care Testing (POCT).
  14. Performing other tasks as assigned by the department manager or director.
Qualifications
  • ASCP certification or equivalent required within 1 year of employment.
  • One year hospital laboratory experience preferred but not mandatory.
  • Bachelor's Degree in chemical, physical, biological sciences, or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent as per CLIA (42 CFR 493.1489).
  • Valid State License if required by the state where the laboratory is located.
