Job summary

West Anaheim Medical Center, a 219-bed acute-care hospital, seeks a Laboratory Supervisor/Lead to oversee daily operations across multiple sections including Hematology, Chemistry, and Microbiology. You will ensure accuracy of results, lead performance-improvement efforts, and mentor staff in a fast-paced hospital setting.

The role requires ASCP certification, 5+ years of hospital lab experience, and an accredited science degree with state licensure where required.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Supervise daily operation of the section(s) and serve as lead or department supervisor.
• Provide consultative support to medical staff asTechnical Consultant.
• Oversee performance improvement programs and participate in hospital initiatives.
• Manage technical and fiscal aspects of the section(s).
• Ensure section quality management and regulatory compliance.
• Assess staff competency and complete timely performance evaluations.
• Verify test results accuracy before reporting to clients.
• Develop and maintain section policies and procedures.
• Review quality control and take corrective actions when tests vary from standards.

Education

Responsibilities

1. 1) functions as the department Section Supervisor or Lead, responsible for supervising the daily operation of the section(s),
2. 2) provides consultative services to the medical staff in the capacity of Technical Consultant,
3. 3) oversees the section/department performance improvement program and participates in hospital interdisciplinary performance improvement initiatives,
4. 4) is responsible for the technical and fiscal management of the section(s),
5. 5) oversees the section(s) quality management/assurance program,
6. 6) ensures compliance with all regulatory and accreditation requirements,
7. 7) assesses staff competency and completes performance evaluations in a timely manner,
8. 8) ensures the accuracy of patient results prior to releasing or reporting,
9. 9) develops, maintains and updates section policy and procedure manuals,
10. 10) reviews quality control performance ensuring documentation of corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications,
11. 11) identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance and either correct the problem or immediately notify the, Director, or Medical Director,
12. 12) performs a wide variety of laboratory procedures requiring independent judgment using both manual and automated methods in Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, Immunology, and any other discipline as introduced into the laboratory,
13. 13) ensures the performance and documentation of equipment maintenance - daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed,
14. 14) recognizes age specific differences in expected results for newborns to geriatrics,
15. 15) ensures that the testing of proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples and that collaboration with other laboratories is prohibited prior to the reporting of proficiency testing results to the appropriate agencies,
16. 16) ensures the currency of all laboratory policies and procedures,
17. 17) adheres to all department and hospital policies and procedures related to safety, infection control, emergency preparedness, and human resources,
18. 18) may be assigned responsibilities related to LIS and/or POC.
19. 19) other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned by the department manager/director.

Qualifications

• ASCP certification, or equivalent, required
• Minimum five years of hospital laboratory work experience required
• Bachelor’s Degree in chemical, physical, biological science, or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution, or other educational requirements as stated in CLIA (42 CFR 493.1489)
• Current and Valid State License if the laboratory is located in a state where required.

A reasonable compensation estimate for this role, which includes estimated wages, benefits, and other forms of compensation, is $38.77 to $56.40. The exact starting compensation to be offered will be determined at the time of selecting an applicant for hire, in which a wide range of factors will be considered, including but not limited to, skillset, years of applicable experience, education, credentials and licensure.
