Position Overview

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist performs a variety of standardized and highly specialized Blood Banking analyses in the Clinical Laboratory. This role ensures the accuracy, reliability, and timeliness of patient test results used for diagnosis, management, and treatment. Responsibilities include performing manual, semi-automated, and automated procedures in accordance with CAP and AABB standards, utilizing standard laboratory equipment, and accurately recording and checking results.

Essential Duties
  1. Perform manual, semi-automated, and automated analyses in Biochemical, Hematological, Microbiological, and Blood Bank areas, maintaining high accuracy and productivity.
  2. Recognize and respond appropriately to normal, abnormal, unusual, and critical results, considering patient age.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in clerical and computer functions, communicate results effectively, and perform additional duties as needed.
  4. Ensure timely availability of results within specified turnaround times.
  5. Maintain effective communication with co-workers, hospital staff, and patients.
  6. Participate in Quality Assurance programs and continuing education.
  7. Monitor supply levels, assist in inventory management, and help train personnel.
  8. Work independently, organize tasks, and assist others as needed.
  9. Follow safety and infection control guidelines, including the use of PPE.
  10. Adapt to new tasks and responsibilities, and cover shifts in emergencies.
  11. Obtain specimens as required and adhere to departmental policies.
  12. Maintain comprehensive knowledge of procedures and instrumentation, understanding their clinical significance.
  13. Identify and resolve issues affecting test performance and report results accurately, including calibration and quality control.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent training/license (California Clinical Laboratory Scientist or California Specialty License).
  • At least 1 year of relevant experience or training in complex laboratory analyses, quality control, calibration, inventory, and maintenance.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with medical staff and promote workplace diversity.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications
  • ASCP Certification.
Licenses/Certifications
  • California Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) or Limited license.
  • Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) within 30 days of hire, maintained through renewal.
Additional Details

The hourly rate range is $53.00 - $87.45. USC considers multiple factors during employment offers, including experience, education, skills, and organizational considerations.
