Job Description Summary
The Clinical Laboratory Assistant for the Physician Assistant (PA) Program supports the delivery of clinical skills and patient assessment education by preparing, maintaining, and assisting with laboratory and simulation activities. This role ensures that instructional sessions run efficiently and students have a safe, organized, and effective environment to develop clinical competencies aligned with program learning outcomes and accreditation standards.
Laboratory Assistants work collaboratively with Program leadership and colleagues to support curriculum delivery while adhering to institutional policies and accreditation requirements.
Responsibilities
- Prepare clinical skills laboratories for instructional sessions, including physical exam, procedural skills, and patient assessment activities.
- Set up and break down equipment, supplies, and simulation stations before and after sessions.
- Assist faculty during skills labs, OSCEs, and simulation exercises.
- Support standardized patient encounters and simulation-based learning activities.
- Help coordinate student flow and timing during OSCEs and practical exams.
- Assist in troubleshooting minor issues during lab sessions.
- Assess student performance fairly and consistently using established rubrics and evaluation criteria.
- Deliver timely, constructive feedback that promotes learning and professional growth.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism during student assessments.
- Serve as a role model for professional behavior, ethical practice, and interprofessional collaboration.
- Support remediation activities when assigned, in collaboration with Course Directors and Program leadership.
- Maintain current clinical knowledge and professional competence in assigned instructional areas.
- Adhere to institutional policies, Program policies, and accreditation standards.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduate degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
- Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience as a PA.
- Eligibility for licensure or current licensure as a Physician Assistant in the state of employment.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively in an academic environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior teaching experience in PA, medical, or allied health education.
- Experience with laboratory instruction, simulation, or clinical skills teaching.
- Familiarity with competency-based education, assessment strategies, and educational technology.
Special Instructions for Applicants
- We interview and hire throughout the academic year. The expected hire date is based on the first date you would be working in the laboratory setting, and this date will vary.
- Appointment will be part-time, with effort defined by assigned instructional responsibilities.
- Responsibilities may include daytime, evening, or occasional weekend activities.
- Clinical Laboratory Assistants do not hold administrative or program leadership responsibilities unless separately appointed.
