Job summary

Med Center Health is seeking a phlebotomy technician to join our laboratory team in Bowling Green, KY. The role performs venipuncture, EKGs, specimen processing, and routine QC within a CLIA-approved lab.

Responsibilities include specimen accessioning, handling chain-of-custody screens, warehouse duties, and on-call ER lab support. Strong on-site presence and accuracy are essential.

Qualifications

  • Formal phlebotomy education or equivalent clinical training.
  • Clinical and didactic phlebotomy exposure or related programs.
  • Domestic high school diploma with on-the-job CLIA lab training.

Responsibilities

  • Performs venipuncture and capillary collections and processes specimens.
  • Performs EKGs and processes tracings.
  • Maintains equipment and performs daily QC in the lab area.
  • Receives, rotates, and stores general lab supplies and specimens.
  • Performs routine glassware washing and QC checks.
  • Collects chain of custody drug screens per client instructions.
  • Assists chemistry staff with specimen sorting, centrifuging, and distribution.
  • Completes shipment paperwork and CPU link orders via Medinet interface.
  • Works independently in STAT or ER lab and reports results within QC times.
  • Maintains cleanliness of the lab outpatient area and tech sections.
  • Rotates on-call coverage for ER and main lab (third shift).
  • Process and accession specimens received through pneumatic tube system.
  • Retrieves and checks incoming specimens and records in the system.
  • Centifuges and distributes specimens to appropriate departments.
  • Performs other activities required for continuous workflow.

Job description

Minimum Qualifications
Work Experience

One year of experience in a CLIA approved laboratory required.
Bachelor's degree in Science may serve in lieu of required work experience.

Education

Has successfully completed a NAACLS-approved formal education program in Phlebotomy; or

Successfully completed a formal education program that includes a clinical and didactic phlebotomy, medical assistant, laboratory assistant program; or

High school graduate or college degree required with completion of minimum of one full year on the job training in a CLIA approved laboratory.

Certifications/Licensure

None required.

Job Specific Performance Standards

  • Performs venipuncture and capillary collections and process specimens.
  • Performs EKG’s and process tracings.
  • Cleans, maintains, and performs quality control on equipment utilized. Performs quality control testing daily on entire menu of testing performed within the STAT or ER laboratory and document as defined by CAP accreditation.
  • Receives, rotates, and stores general lab supplies, inventory and stock assigned specimen collection material.
  • Performs routine and special glassware washing and quality control checks on the glassware.
  • Collects chain of custody drug screens, following client instructions staying within appropriate legal constraints.
  • Assists chemistry staff with sorting, centrifuging, and distributing specimens to specific analyzers for testing.
  • Completes paperwork for shipment of specimens to referral labs to include completion of CPU link order via Medinet interface.
  • Works independently in STAT or ER lab, properly identifying specimens, running tests and reporting results within defined STAT turnaround time parameters.
  • Maintains good housekeeping of lab outpatient area and technical section of laboratory where assigned.
  • Rotates call for third shift coverage of ER and main laboratory.

Process and accession specimens received through pneumatic tube system.

Retrieves incoming specimens; checks for suitability and receives into the computer system.

Centrifuges and distributes specimens to appropriate departments of Chemistry, Blood Bank, Hematology, Urinalysis and Microbiology.

  • Performs other miscellaneous activities required for continuous workflow.
