Summary

The Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT) is responsible for performing a wide range of duties to service in-house, outpatient, and outreach clients. This role primarily handles the pre-analytical section of the laboratory, including receiving and processing lab specimens, as approved by the State of Tennessee Medical Laboratory Licensing Board.

Responsibilities
  1. Accessioning all specimens delivered to the laboratory.
  2. Inspecting incoming specimens to ensure proper collection and labeling.
  3. Reviewing outpatient orders and billing information for accuracy and completeness.
  4. Registering and entering non-patient orders into the laboratory information system.
  5. Following up with clients to complete any incomplete documentation.
  6. Serving as a resource for information requests and problem solving for clients.
  7. Processing and packaging specimens referred to external laboratories, including researching rare tests.
  8. Communicating specimen collection information to physicians or patients and following special handling/shipping procedures.
  9. Having knowledge of available tests, specimen requirements, turnaround times, and results to assist clients and healthcare providers.
  10. Communicating outpatient STAT results via fax or telephone.
  11. Performing waived/exempt tests such as glucose, bleeding times, occult blood, etc., including quality control and reagent preparation.
  12. Conducting daily temperature checks and processing pathology body fluids and tissues for distribution to histology.
Requirements
  • One year of healthcare or laboratory experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology required.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, demonstrate critical thinking, initiative, and sound judgment.
  • Computer literacy required; training on laboratory computer systems can be provided.
