Job summary

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Louisiana seeks a Clinical Lab Scientist (Ancillary Testing Coordinator) at the GS-12 level. The role includes leadership responsibilities, oversight of testing programs, and ensuring readiness for inspections by regulatory bodies.

Proficiency in Point of Care testing, laboratory information systems, and continuous quality improvement is required. Preferred candidates hold a bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or related field with ASCP MT/MLS

Qualifications

• U.S. citizenship required; non-citizens may be appointed only when qualified citizens cannot be recruited per VA policy.
• Education: a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college/university.
• Certification: must meet one of the options: (a) MLS (ASCP BOC) or (AMT), (b) MT (ASCP BOR or AM), (c) Categorical/Specialist (ASCP or AMT).
• Grandfathering provision applies to employees under the standard at the time of appointment; may require credentials for promotion.
• Grade determinations: Clinical Laboratory Scientist (Ancillary Testing Coordinator) - GS-12; 1 year of creditable experience at the next lower grade requested.

Responsibilities

• Serves as acting supervisor in the absence of the supervisor as assigned.
• Maintains readiness for regulatory inspections and accreditation (TJC, CAP, VA National Pathology Office).
• Trains and oversees competency of personnel in Ancillary Testing procedures and reporting of results.
• Develops technical bulletins, procedures, and SOPs to ensure accreditation and regulatory compliance.
• Implements corrective actions when deficiencies are identified and ensures regulatory compliance of POC testing systems.
• Builds and runs laboratory SQL searches and supports LIS connectivity with POC systems.
