Job Description
The Clinical Lab Assistant I reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with lab staff, ancillary departments, nurses, and providers to ensure excellent patient care.
  • Receive specimens into the laboratory information system.
  • Input and retrieve lab results in laboratory or hospital computer systems.
  • Register specimen drop-offs (e.g., Home health) in LIS, ensuring accurate data entry.
  • Distribute specimens to the appropriate testing area.
  • Identify and resolve problems with the assistance of supervisors, managers, pathologists, or coworkers as needed.
  • Perform waived testing accurately under the direction of CLS as applicable.
  • Ensure the correct sample type is received for testing, including appropriate container and volume.
  • Communicate specimen rejections and critical/notifiable results to clinical personnel; complete documentation.
  • Review/record refrigerator temperatures and QC/QA records; report issues through the Corrective Action Log.
  • Follow lab procedures, including timely follow-up on outstanding orders and time-sensitive draws/charges.
  • Pull AP slides for second opinions and log material back into Epic upon return.
  • Answer lab phone calls and triage appropriately.
  • Coordinate courier pickups as needed.

Department Specific:

  • May perform phlebotomy and other specimen collections as per age-related standards.

Qualifications

  • Required: High School Diploma
  • Preferred: 1 year of experience in a general lab, specimen processing, or phlebotomy department
