Job Description

Job Summary: Provides quality laboratory service to medical providers in a customer-service-oriented environment. Obtains and processes laboratory specimens, performs order entry, and conducts minor laboratory testing. Responsible for obtaining and processing blood/urine specimens from patients.

Impact on Patient Care:

Your responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Receiving lab orders from providers, preparing documentation, and performing routine tests.
  • Maintaining documentation and labeling specimens according to standards, and understanding specimen collection devices and tubes.
  • Maintaining equipment, keeping the workspace clean, stocking supplies, and organizing the work area.
  • Practicing sterile techniques and preventing cross-contamination, handling blood and body fluids, and managing infectious patients.
  • Performing minor laboratory procedures accurately and efficiently, including chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, and immunology.
  • Performing phlebotomy through venous and capillary puncture following established procedures, observing antisepsis principles.
  • Receiving and collecting urine specimens for testing.
  • Preparing specimens for procedures and tests.
  • Maintaining supplies inventory and communicating needs to supervisors.
  • Reporting test results and abnormal findings to clinical staff.
  • Adhering to safety, cleanliness, and infection control policies, and utilizing PPE appropriately.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Knowledge of infectious disease protocols, practices, and prevention.
  • Moderate knowledge of medical terminology and computer applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification as laboratory assistant, phlebotomist, or medical assistant preferred.
