Job description

Description

The Clinical Lab Assistant (“CLA”) 1 may be responsible for the pre-analytical processing of laboratory specimens. Responsibilities include sorting, verifying specimen labeling, order entry and distribution, and specimen retrieval. The CLA 1 is responsible for procuring and preparing blood specimens by venipuncture and arterial puncture according to departmental standards, including proper tube selection with correct additives, patient preparation, puncture site care, and accurate patient and specimen identification. The CLA 1 also collects electrocardiograms in inpatient and outpatient settings, utilizing knowledge of laboratory procedures to prioritize workload and handle challenging situations such as combative patients or difficult draws. Additionally, the CLA 1 performs proper collection of throat and nasopharyngeal swabs and instructs on collecting urine, stool, and sputum cultures.

Requirements
  • Ability and willingness to demonstrate and maintain competency for the job and assigned unit/area(s).
  • Excellent communication skills, including oral and written comprehension and expression.
  • Proficiency in computer skills necessary for accurately recording specimen data in the laboratory information system, aiding physicians in test interpretation.
  • Ability and willingness to work with patients of all ages, addressing their developmental needs.
  • Ability to manage a challenging work environment, including caring for patients with acute, chronic, or complex conditions, and those who are dying.
  • Maintain a high level of customer service, meeting the needs of both internal and external customers.
