Job description

Collects and processes blood specimens for testing in the laboratory.

Reports to: Phlebotomy Supervisor

Under the supervision and direction of a medical technologist and in accordance with CLAI88 guidelines, performs pre- and post-analytical test processing in the clinical lab, which may include:

1. Placing specimens on automated analyzers for analysis
2. Processing microbiology specimens for routine culture analysis
3. Performing waived and moderate testing platforms
4. Logging and distributing patient test specimens within the lab
5. Entering patient demographics and test orders into the automated chemistry analyzer

Additional responsibilities include:

• Labeling, processing, and delivering specimens for testing
• Collecting ordered specimens from patients using age-appropriate techniques
• Maintaining equipment and medical supplies
• Using computer systems for data entry and workflow monitoring
• Registering patients accurately
• Performing routine department functions such as answering phones, taking messages, and handling correspondence
• Maintaining a clean and organized work environment
• Recording quality control results for occupational medicine
• Managing workflow, breaks, and lunch schedules in the absence of lead or supervisor
• Ordering and stocking laboratory supplies, managing expiration dates
• Overseeing specimen collection and processing for reference labs, pathology, and state labs according to protocols
• Assisting in training new team members
• Storing reports properly

Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Graduation from a formal phlebotomy program with at least 40 hours of clinical experience or certification preferred.

Required Skills: BLS certification from an approved American Heart Association or Red Cross training center within 90 days of employment. CPT certification or similar professional certification preferred. Must possess critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work independently in stressful environments.

Minimum Work Experience: Two years of phlebotomy or accessioning experience in a hospital setting, or six months of successful performance at Sumner Regional Medical Center, or enrollment in a clinical laboratory science program.
