Job Details

The Laboratory Assistant/Phlebotomist supports lab operations by processing and handling patient specimens for diagnostic testing in an accurate and timely manner, following established protocols. The Lab Assistant/Phlebotomist is responsible for receiving, centrifuging, storing, and transporting/distributing samples to maintain sample integrity. They perform phlebotomy and collect blood specimens via venipuncture or other micro-techniques as required. Providing excellent customer service to patients, physicians, and nursing staff is essential, including instructions and assistance regarding laboratory testing results. Basic laboratory techniques and testing in accordance with CLIA requirements may also be performed.

Job Description
Essential Functions:
  1. Interacts professionally with co-workers, visitors, and staff, reflecting Jefferson's values.
  2. Cooperates with laboratory and nursing staff to ensure proper specimen collection and communicates effectively, especially when patients refuse or language barriers exist.
  3. Follows department policies for patient identification and sample labeling.
  4. Ensures an orderly and timely flow of specimens to expedite analysis.
  5. Reviews lab requisitions for accuracy, completeness, and medical necessity, and routes specimens accordingly.
  6. Prepares specimens for analysis, including centrifuging, aliquoting, and plating; transports and stores specimens properly.
  7. Performs registration procedures to assist patients and hospital personnel.
  8. Coordinates loading of patient samples onto automation lines as needed.
  9. Performs other lab assistance duties, including phlebotomy and training of other staff, as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent
Experience: 1-2 years of laboratory experience preferred; prior lab assistance and/or phlebotomy training required at some locations.

Minimum Certifications, Registration or License Requirements:

Phlebotomy certification is preferred.
