The Clinical Lab Assistant (CLA) 1 may be responsible for pre-analytical processing of laboratory specimens, including sorting, verification of specimen labeling, order entry and distribution, and specimen retrieval. The CLA 1 is responsible for procuring and preparing blood specimens via venipuncture and arterial puncture according to departmental standards, including proper tube selection, patient preparation, puncture site care, and correct patient and specimen identification. The CLA 1 also collects electrocardiograms in inpatient and outpatient settings, prioritizes workload using laboratory procedures, and handles challenging situations such as difficult draws or combative patients. Additionally, the CLA 1 performs collection of throat and nasopharyngeal swabs and instructs on collecting urine, stool, and sputum cultures.
