Job description

Under direct supervision, the Lab Assistant provides accessioning and processing services, utilizing appropriate equipment to receive, accession, and process pathology and laboratory specimens. The role also involves providing laboratory information and reports to customers. Additionally, the Lab Assistant assists in training and monitoring co-workers, students, and other hospital staff.

Education: HS Diploma

Experience: 6 months related Laboratory accessioning experience

Patient & Workplace Safety: The employee has knowledge and understanding of patient and workforce safety as it relates to job duties.

Patient Population: Demonstrates competency in the delivery of care and applies the knowledge to meet age-specific needs if applicable.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Enters accurate and complete patient demographic information, laboratory test orders, and verifies collection/receipt of specimens with completeness and accuracy. Documents procedures appropriately and ensures accurate samples for referral testing by utilizing appropriate work lists.
  2. Prepares and processes specimens for testing in the clinical laboratory, including labeling, measuring, aliquoting, centrifuging, etc. Distributes and retrieves specimens from the appropriate work areas.
  3. Demonstrates detailed telephone etiquette, including verbal etiquette, communication, and knowledge of medical terminology, test pronunciation, and customer interaction.
  4. Completes responsibilities such as centrifuge maintenance, label maintenance, disinfection of counters, filing, and boxing requisitions. Stocks and maintains supplies.
  5. Checks all outpatient orders for accuracy, matches requisitions to Meditech orders, and labels accordingly.
  6. Responds to all stat orders promptly.
  7. Accurately completes Quest, LabCorp, and Sheppard Pratt registrations.
  8. Participates in the Laboratory's continuing education program, sharing knowledge gained from seminars, workshops, etc.
  9. Ensures patient safety by following procedures for patient identification, using two identifiers, and double-checking specimens against orders in Meditech.
  10. Packages and transports specimens according to policy and procedures.
  11. Sends all specimens to the lab in a timely manner.
  12. Performs routine operations of the Modular Pre-Analytics, including maintenance, troubleshooting, specimen loading, handling, storage, and retrieval.

Pay Range: $16.79 - $24.37. Final salary based on qualifications, education, experience, and organizational needs.
